Would this technology create an era of indestructible gadgets, or would manufacturers resist a world where broken phones no longer drive sales?

How would a hydrogel battery repair a cracked frame or screen?

i want the old phones back where you could swap out batteries out at least . u hate the newer style that has it locked together , even though batteries have gotten way better

What would be the energy density vs something like a lithium iron phosphate pack?

The battery doesnt matter for the cracks in the frame or glass. For that you need self reparing material like nanobots or carbon micro tubes stuff..!

let me point out, you’d sooner summon your contact with the power of thought by fusing your neural tissue with an external antenna on the edge of your ears than tech giants would let you dream of self-repairing their gadgets.

so the terminators are going to be unkillable, got it.

No? That’s not a hard question to answer, it couldn’t, no.

I’m confused… Cracks in the battery or screen? How could a battery repair cracks in a screen? I’m lost

Why are you asking me? I just woke up? I work at Burger King.

I assume what op is referring to is that you could theoretically make a hydrogel screen (you can already get hydrogel screen protectors), and you can already make self healing hydrogel. So a self healing hydrogel screen isn’t totally implausible. I don’t actually know if the hydrogel batteries are needed, but that is another technology that exists and is being developed at the moment. I think if all the technologies could reach commercial viability, companies would go for it for sure, because phones are all about constant improving technology and self healing screens would be a huge reason to buy.

Y’all don’t remember the LG G Flex with self healing back ?

I owned the phone. I never tested the healing back intentionally, but it virtually had no micro scratches on it despite how many times I dropped the thing caseless.

I’m sure manufacturers are jumping at the chance to make your phone last longer so their profits plummet. The average in use smartphone age is getting older and older as it is. Don’t expect them to make the last one you ever need to buy.

No. Companies would make less money if devices didn’t break as much.

Companies literally make anti repair strategies, no way they will add healing even if it was possible.

I think one day we’ll have epoxied monolith smartphones without ports that are 100% unfixable

Interesting idea but how would you incorporate the liquid into the screen to prevent cracks without compromising everything screens does?

The answer to an article title containing a yes/no question is always “No”.
