Got his picture from one of Lizzie's BD Mods, so maybe that's why. But I see no Nile river, barely see Europe, and I feel like generally there should be more lights.

    War. Environmental damage. Climate change.

Maybe it’s dark because it’s NIGHT on this side of Earth? You can literally see the sun being on the other side, illuminating the Earth, well…..FROM THE OTHER SIDE!!!

P.S: After reading the question again, I finally understood the true meaning of the question…..

Well….. it’s explained in the game. As some already said, ecological problems (a great part of Europe is under water if I recall that correctly), corporation wars, probably consequences of the Datacrash and so on. A great part of the people could also have gathered themselves in the big and important cities, completely abandoning smaller and less important ones.

They don’t call it the “roleplaying game of the dark future” for nothing…

Corporate wars, the world is in a post-apocalypse society, just that most of the Mad-Max got skipped over and we went into post-post-apoc, it’s just so high tech that it’s hard to tell, specially in technological hot spots like NC.

And things are about to get much worse once the next Corpo war breaks out and Blackwall AI’s are involved.

  5. Incredulity1995

I imagine there’s a lot of uninhabited places from all the war, Corpo bs and DATAKRASH.

  6. saddisticidiot

Yea because it’s night time dummy

  7. MalcadorPrime

Theres been 4 corporate wars. At least one nuclear war. The datakrash. And i think many smaller conflicts.

the lore accuracy of cyberpunk is (if i’m not mistaken) 90% of the earth and its population was wiped out but nuclear bombs so yeah, there wouldn’t be any lights, civilization, or animals in the dark areas

  9. Lonsen_Larson

Well much of the Middle East was largely depopulated in the aftermath of the Suicide War, though some civilization has returned. I’d imagine much of the area around it was likewise killed off by the radioactive fallout.

Also, since rivers flow into oceans and oceans are still mostly death traps from the AI mines, it would make sense for much of civilization to drift away from the oceans and larger rivers since they don’t provide a benefit anymore and could be a liability.

In some shards it’s been said that Europe is under water or something, and because of the climate change a lot of people go to Antarctica and the North Pole. China is almost broken, Africa is Africa even in the game, Brazil and South America are the China of this world. And Japan is just a big Arasaka island.

  11. Pankejx

people keep saying that war lowered the population, but maybe they just fixed light pollution in Europe?

The world of Cyberpunk is a post-apocalyptic one. Between nuclear weapons, corporate wars, pollution, and unrestrained resource extraction, the global ecosystem has been devastated and massive swathes of the planet have been rendered uninhabitable, resulting in billions of deaths. That’s why it looks so empty.

If you listen to the news snippets you can hear –

    Network News 54

    Welcome to N54 News.
Hello, I’m Gillean Jordan. Welcome to the world report on N54 News. In Northern Europe, the humanitarian crisis has worsened. Refugees from flooded regions in Belgium and the Netherlands continue to pour into Scandinavia. Sweden has responded with force, sinking over a dozen refugee vessels in recent weeks. Despite humanitarian efforts, nearly sixty people have been killed. Have we found Heaven on Earth? Permanent human settlement on Antarctica is celebrating ten years today. A wealth of natural resources hidden under the ice has spurred the continent’s rapid economic development. Though some environmental degradation has occurred as a result, inhabitants of the South Pole are still enjoying life as Antarctica’s first dollhouse was recently opened.

    Venice is underwater.
Solar farms are discontinued and the dust from the hymalan wars has limited the amount of solar hitting the earth. Wind power has also failed.

The humanitarian situation in Europe, 20% of the continent is no longer suitable for humans to live in. Temp have reached 104f. Air pollution in Poland, Bulgaria and Romania now exceeds the contents average by 2000%.

Radioactive sand storms from the former states of Syria, Iraq and Iran. From the suicide war.

Alaska is in hardship, corn harvests have dropped, because of catastrophic heavy rains and storms. They are contracted to biotechnia and the choice is to go hungry and send crops or break the agreement and forgo the next seed delivery. Nano bees terrorised in Milan.

That’s about all I could pull.

NC back with you so soon? How’s your afternoon!

Just wait a couple of hours it’s a thing it does every day

  15. Tragobe

Because Most of the planet got destroyed. There is a reason why everything outside night city is just sand and desert. The whole world looks like that. Climate change and wars tend to destroy most of the world.

  16. makujah

They probably got the anti-light-pollution fixtures everywhere apart form NC 😌

  17. RoccoTirolese

You can’t see much of Europe probably because it got swallowed by the rising sea levels. I would assume that most of England, the Netherlands and parts of Italy disappeared.

  18. Beliam21

Maybe sun dimming due to industrial pollution.

  19. Surely it can’t be that the sun is shining on the other side… Surely…

  20. ShineReaper

    I wouldn’t take this picture as lore-representative.

For the fact that allegedly the Benelux countries are under water, there are too many lights still present there.
And for the fact, that there was a nuclear war in the Middle East, making it uninhabitable, there are too many lights for that either.

I think they just took a generic model of Earth, put lights on it and put it ingame.

Don’t forget: Cyberpunk was rushed in development, even though we don’t see much of it anymore due to CD:PR working on it after release to fix most of it.

There is no reason, that, when they already didn’t have enough time, they would’ve put work into lore-accurately representing Earth.

Also in general the knowledge of the state of the world in the Cyberpunk Universe is hazy at best, because it is focused on Night City, we only have snippets here and there about the remaining world.

Hence I hope that with future Cyberpunk Media in that universe they’ll build up and explore other locations in the world too.
