I’m a college teacher and researcher in my 50s, currently working on my fifth book. This is my dedicated research-only setup. I keep teaching, email, and admin on a separate laptop. I use this station strictly for research, about 20 hours a week (cognitive separation).
Why This Setup Exists
I built this space to stay focused, write clearly, and work deeply without switching between tasks or tabs. It keeps distractions low, both mentally and visually, and everything runs quietly and smoothly.
Core Hardware
PC: Minisforum BD790i
64GB DDR5-5400 RAM
2TB NVMe SSD with cloud backup
All fans replaced with Noctua models and fan curves adjusted, The system runs nearly silent 99% of the time
RTX 3050 GPU with 6GB VRAM
Not used for gaming
I use it to power multiple displays without lag or image issues and to keep everything visually clean during high-use tasks like large PDF searches
Monitor Layout
Center: 27 inch curved monitor at 240Hz in full color. This is where I write, typically in Word
Left: 15.6 inch portable monitor in grayscale, horizontal. ChatGPT stays open here to help test ideas and offer counterpoints
Right: 27 inch portable monitor in grayscale, vertical. I often keep 30 to 40 PDFs open at once and search through them during writing. I may replace this with a 17.3 inch display to reduce the footprint and improve screen balance
Bottom: 15.6 inch portable monitor in grayscale. EndNote is always open here with my full reading archive including thousands of sources, notes, PDFs, spreadsheets, and media files
Why Grayscale on Most Screens
Only the center monitor is in color. That helps me stay visually locked on the main task. Everything else supports the work and grayscale keeps those screens calm and non-distracting,, more in the background
How I Use It
EndNote gives me searchable access to everything I have read and annotated over the last 25 years
ChatGPT is open as a sparring partner for testing arguments and refining ideas
Acrobat runs on the right for fast searching through large collections of PDFs
FreedomApp blocks access to email, Reddit, shopping, and other common distractions
I use the Pomodoro method to track focused writing time
Most of my writing happens early in the day when my attention is sharpest
Why It Works
This setup keeps me locked in and moving. It is quiet, stable, and everything I need is in view at all times. It has taken a lot of trial and error to eliminate friction.
Right now I am focused on removing delays, distractions, and inefficiencies. So, for me it’s about finding ways to increase productivity 1 or 2%. Such improvements matter a lot over time. I’m always open to productivity ideas from others doing focused reading and writing work.

Can you share the details on those portable monitors? Do you prefer one over the other?
Nice setup! BUT: You don’t need a 3050 to run multiple displays smoothly or to load and scroll big pdf. It’s not being loaded into the VRAM. I would recommend a good (AND QUIET) mechanical keyboard though, not sure which one yours is, but looks like some Logitech rubberdome.
