It’s not a meme, it makes the video better that’s basically DLDSR.

It does look better couse of higher bit rate

Used to do this for the higher bitrate

Higher bitrate. Less data = less detail, regardless of what the dimensions of the video are. You can also make 4K videos and compress them to look like a 360p minecraft livestream from 2012.
Youtube’s 1080p videos are compressed to shit, their bitrate is ~4Mbps (with VP9), while it’s about 15Mbps for 4K, which is more similar to what a 1080p movie on bluray would be for example (*assuming H265, which is similar in quality to youtube’s VP9*).

I long for a future where we are no longer plagued by shit video compression.
Until then I must hope that everything I want to watch gets Blu-ray releases
(I’m still waiting on the slo mo guys disc they mentioned like twice several years ago)

Forcing higher resolution because the bitrate on youtube fckng sucks! Classic.
edgy_Juno
It looks better though, maybe not drastically, but it does. I do the same on my phone and PC, both with 1440p screens. There’s more details due to the higher bitrate.

I got a word for ya…..compression

I made a meme, and now I’ve gained knowledge from the comments, lol

Well actually, considering the birtate and stuff…

Watching youtube on 4K with a gtx 1080:

Watching youtube 360p on my 720p monitor.

huh, the bitrate. so that’s why linus usually tests 4k playback on 1080p screens…

watching 360p on 4k OLED

I remember the first time watching 4K on my 1080p monitor, it definitely was better, now I always have videos set to 4K even though my monitor is still 1080p
Astrisfr
I have no idea of it works but playing 1440p in game and downscaling it to my native 1080p monitor resolution makes all my games look crispiers and more detailed BY A LOT.
Xidash
1440p is the best to use on a 1080p monitor, I made the comparison between colors and details from 1080p and that’s noticeable. Going from 1440p to 4k doesn’t change it much hence would be a waste of power and bandwitdh.
sidhellfire
Audio bitrate is also vastly improved. Feels silly to force 4K to see one static album cover, but it’s the only way.
um_gato_gordo
I can’t even load 720p in with my shitass internet
TRUEequalsFALSE
Bruh, I such YouTube in 1080p on my 1440p monitor because my internet can’t reliably give me more than that. Plus with how bad YouTube compression I’d, it’s not like it really makes that big of a difference.
sookmyloot
It does look better! But to experience it, you really need a big screen. Fortunately I have one, but the real deal is the Quest VR headset. I can have extra large virtual screen where even 4K doesn’t look sharp anymore. 8K is there to save my day 😀
