Former Concord dev says ‘it was gut wrenching to see our project fail’ but urges players not to judge Marathon too soon: ‘To call this game a failure before it’s even out is wild to me’
Former Concord dev says ‘it was gut wrenching to see our project fail’ but urges players not to judge Marathon too soon: ‘To call this game a failure before it’s even out is wild to me’
they are simply judging it on what it will offer. paying a upfront cost for 3 maps and 6 runners with gameplay that’s littteraly just the bare minimum to be a extraction shooter when there are free extraction shooters that offer more is just wild.
smellyourdick
Honestly, the less mental connection Marathon has to Concord the better. One of the devs speaking about this isn’t going to sway the negative judgment crowd, it’s going to just give them more ammo.
Simbakim
I dont like anything ive seen yet from it and the art style is cancer to me, and I know alot of people will feel the same
Chajos
It gets judged against its competition. Because most people will not play 2 games of the same type for long.
Sabetha1183
Calling it a failure is just the internet being the internet.
Though the underlying message there still is that what those people are seeing from the marketing material isn’t terribly exciting.
MaybeUNeedAPoo
I mean he’s right but also at this point in history if you’re a gamer, you kinda got a feel for things right? You know what this is and how it will go because you’ve already done it a tonne of times.
You know if you like milk in your coffee. You don’t need to try it every time you order to be sure you’re right.
Stop treating customers as if they’re idiots.
Icy-Ambassador-7722
that just means it’s gonna flop even harder
luuey96
With how games are nowadays I don’t blame anyone that thinks like that. People have made up their minds from the trailers that were shown. Honestly the trailers for me the games looks pretty bad and with so many other free extraction shooters that are free to play this one being paid doesn’t help.
NotMorganSlavewoman
The former Concord dev left long before the game was released. And he left because they didn’t let him do his own designs, but forced to do those bad designs from final version.
MakimaGOAT
Oh damn
denn23rus
Video game market is very fair. Word of mouth works very well here and rewards developers for their talent and effort. Each game finds exactly as many players as it could get and Concord got its 800 players, exactly as many as it deserved. Let’s see what happens with Marathon.
cream_of_human
Listen. I didnt look at madame web before it came out and said “man, ill give it a shot still”
Ik its not an equal comparison but this genre and style just doesnt look sing with me.
Not to mention the the property couldve worked as a remake with MP instead of this.
CascadeJ1980
I was excited for Marathon at first thinking “a pseudo sequel/spin-off to Destiny?! Cool I’m in!” Because me and my buddies are strictly pve fans so we’d thought we could take a break from The Division 2 with Marathon only to learn it’s just another pvp extraction bullshit shooter.🙄 We were out.

‘To call this game a failure before it’s even out is wild to me’
Why? Video games are visual entertainment. People clearly can speak out if they don’t like the art direction, or the game play shown on videos.
Personally, I just watched the marathon gameplay reveal. It is pretty much meh. Another squad shooter in another sci-fi setting with ok, but uninspiring arts.
Sure, it is not Concord with all the ugly character design but nothing here jumps out with a personality or anything that seems very innovative. The video game market is very very saturated now. Just doing ok and on par with the existing titles is not going to cut it.
Osiris121
It feels like the AAA industry has become so stagnant that it can’t come up with anything new anymore.
Additionally, taking a franchise known for its compelling story and creating sequels where the narrative plays no significant role in gameplay is, quite frankly, criminal.
ConfusedGuy3260
I’m not taking gaming advice from somebody who had a hand in making one of the largest failures in industry history
awen478
Vote with your wallet I guess, just let’s see when it’s released
Souldrainr
The mere knowledge that concord devs are excited for and want this game to succeed tells me all I need to know.
Malabingo
Concord failed because it added nothing new.
There were many well established hero shooters but it wasn’t catchy.
Other hero shooters arose successfully because they already had a fan base like marvel rivals. But Concord was new with characters no one knew and also had a big paywall
MagicalWorker
My only complaint of people’s worries or criticism is the comparison from Marathon to Concord. The game looks and seems to play nothing like Concord. I don’t know why people started to say “wow, it looks like Concord” when it looks nothing alike.
Stolzor
Trust in bungie is at a record low
Gameplay looks bland and uninspired
If i wanted Apex, I’d play Apex
I’d bet money on it going to be an overmonitized piece of crap, at the very least 2-3 years after release.
DasGaufre
He must either be in denial or blind to the current state of AAA games if a disappointed reaction is “wild” to him.
thatguywiththeposts
It’s not the developers fault the game failed. They were basically forced to implement every idea that came from a higher-up or get fired for criticizing it.
SasamiAdachi
When is the last time you bought a game that didn’t look good to you? There are so many other options these days.
SlackerDao
All I know about the new Marathon is that they took one of the most iconic games I played back in the day and turned it into some multiplayer shooter. I don’t even care if it’s a *good* shooter.
It’d be like releasing KC:D 3 as a battle royale game.
IndexLabyrinthya
Kill the justice league and concord were DOA because they refused to listen to gamers.
If this game is anything like concord……its dead.
SuperSaiyanIR
Now I know this game will sell one Marathonillion units!
EngineeringNo753
I have no idea how I am supposed to look at that design and think to myself.
Ooo wow.
It looks so ugly, and without a single player concept to explain why it looks like that, most people are going to find it ugly and be put off.
BrothelWaffles
With the way they’ve handled Destiny, I hope it *is* “Concord 2.0”. Fuck Bungie. They don’t respect their players’ time or wallets whatsoever.
StalfoLordMM
I’m judging it because you took a thought provoking sci fi horror shooter and made it a live service extraction game. It isn’t even Marathon at this point. You’re just banking on the name
Logondo
I swear the people who act like Concord is the worse game ever, to me, are just showing how young they are.
Concord is hardly the first AAA flop we’ve gotten. Yes, it’s probably one of the most expensive flops…so far. But that’s also because game-development in general just costs more.
But Christ, we’re not even that far from Anthem. And does anyone else remember APB? That game lasted literally 1 month before it got shut-down.
Renicus
I understand the sentiment, but gamers have been around the block toooo many times. Graphics don’t necessarily matter, but when a game is flat out ugly, or it looks like another corporate blueprint copy, there’s little reason to invest even from a time aspect, never mind paying 60-90 dollars.
I could go into the variety of hero shooters that are available, but we all understand why concord never had a chance. Extraction shooters were fun and exciting until we realized they’re filled to the brim with cheaters. I was huge on these games with the release of Arena Breakout and Delta Force, and by all means, they are fun games. It’ll never be fun to lose time investment to cheaters. I convinced myself for a long time that a few good games in between a “cheater match” was fine, but if you do any kind of investigation into what the cheaters are using, suddenly being targeted and rushed down when you bring in an expensive loadout doesn’t feel like a coincidence anymore.
Maybe a fat price tag and decent investment into anti-cheat can prove me wrong, but then the game just looks bland to me on top of it. I have plenty to play right now where I don’t have to take a chance on another extraction shooter.
Syenthros
Didn’t even know Concord and Marathon were connected. It just looks boring to me, and yet another extraction shooter in a saturated market? Hard pass from me.
MisterDuch
It’s not really wild imo.
If it was an actual, Marathon game proper? I’d cope trough thin and thick, even if it was only a reboot aslong as it was Faithfull.
But an extraction shooter? They just slapped the name Marathon on it for the name recognition.
Alternative_Gold_993
Is this implying that they were shocked Concord failed? If so, that speaks volumes.
porkybrah
No matter the medium whether it’s film, anime, tv or whatever its easy to spot shite from a mile away now more than ever.
dnscarlet
So many game devs are out of touch with what players want. I don’t know if it’s because they listen to investors instead of players.
How on earth do you have a whole internet to use and gather any data you need for your game, yet fail to do so, when game devs 2 decades ago had limited or zero access to the internet but managed to produce masterpieces that even get remakes and remasters these days?
It’s truly baffling, maybe the gaming industry really needs a hard reset.
