This was a start menu not too long ago. Yes, this is Windows.

Windows 8 wasn’t great but 8.1 was. Smooth like Windows 7. And with Classic Start Menu you didn’t have to deal with or use Metro screen from 8 / 8.1 too.

  2. bruhgubgub

As a kid I loved how this looked but my laptop was too slow to do anything on it

  3. Even-Smell7867

You too are young. I bought WindowsME day 1 and refused to let it beat me.

  4. Yelebear

I liked it at first. I thought it was cool. After about a week I’ve grown to hate it.

  5. OrangeKefir

Windows 8 was a really stupid idea. Hated that crap.

  6. DiscoKeule

If you hate the usual windows try it on a surface RT! That’s a Arm chip. It’s a paperweight lol

  7. Sufficient-Candy-211

we’re just not gonna talk about vista right?

  8. danivus

Those using 8 as an example of the worst Windows must also be very young.

  9. Pimpwerx

98 and earlier were buggy. That makes them the worst. A stable OS with just a bunch of dumb MS decisions in it isn’t that big of a deal. The most you have to do now is disable stuff. But no worries about your box crashing doing even the lightest work.

  10. DrStasis

Upgrading my Inspiron Duo to Windows 8 is one of my favorite experiences.

  11. DaBingJam

I thought windows 3.1 was fine for what it was back in the Dos days. I thought Windows 95 sucked as it crashed all the time.

I liked 98, xp, and 7 probably the most.

I think Windows 11 does suck though not my favorite by any means 10 is/was much better.

  12. fersnake

xp, 7 and 10 are the goat.

i remember installing 8 and the second i saw that awful start screen i installed startisback i believe it was xD

  13. Naive-Assignment4218

Windows 8 would’ve been fire on handhelds.

  14. chipface

Windows 8 was actually pretty decent if you installed Classic Shell or Start8.

  15. Un4giv3n-madmonk

    I would take 8 over 11 honestly.

Start screen was fine by me ran on second display caused me no issues.

That said … you could run 7 for the entire service life of 8 with 7 getting security updates.

  16. Oh to be young and not seen, ME, Vista, Windows 8, Windows RT. Bless there cotton socks. Although at least those fun times didn’t have Microsoft forcing an on-line account and unwanted app ads.

  17. ssssSSSBOOM

Hissssss. This was bad, but try windows8 on a surface. Hell.

  18. EmperorThor

its not THE worst, its the 2nd Worst, maybe 3rd if you ever had the misfortune of ME. But there is no good reason why after all these years we continue to go backwards.

  19. zsoltjuhos

Lies, windows released only Xp, 7 and 10… dunno what Vista and 8 is

  20. kingk1teman

You young whippersnappers have no idea of the horrors of Windows Millennium Edition & 98 First Edition.

ME destroyed 2 new hard drives of mine.

  21. SuperSaiyanIR

I still have my old family laptop with Windows 8, it didn’t see much use then especially since we were coming from Windows 7.

  22. Randommaggy

With classic shell replacing the start menu, it was peak Windows.

  23. Karekter_Nem

Microsoft needs to bring this back as an option. I get they designed this for tablets and it’s fun to hate on it, but it would be nice to use something like this for my HTPC so I can navigate it with a controller. Sure, I can use a keyboard and mouse, but those suck while on a sofa. Controller is just more comfortable.

  24. Hexagon37

I remember using computers for years beforehand with the normal windows layout.

Bought my first ever laptop and it was this weird trashy layout and I had no idea why and then one day it just went away (idk if I was aware I updated windows to get rid of it) it was like some weird blip in the timeline

  25. sirjoey150

I remember being eight or trying to figure out how to get to mini clip and raging because this was so confusing

  26. Jumpy_Army889

W11 has been a really smooth sailing for me without any issues at all. XP was the best, Lets forget about vista, 7 was really good. 10 was a pain in the ass with constant issues.

  27. MotivationGaShinderu

I liked it. Classic shell restored old start for regular use and I had all my games pinned to the big menu with custom borders I made (still have them somewhere too lol).

  28. Svedorovski

I still member the nokia windows phone

  29. jakkals82567

As a kid windows was windows. Be it XP, 7 or 8 I was just ballin’ playing games and dicking around on windows movie maker. Life was a dream

  30. NEVER85

Those saying Windows 8 is the worst must also be very young.

  31. Mooky_Stank

I worked at an office supply store when 8 came out and people lost their damn minds. They were coming in constantly complaining about it and wanting us to roll back their PCs that could only use 8. Then 8.1 came out and they all wanted that and it really felt like unearned business. It felt gross to make money off of it, even if I didn’t actually make money. I’ve used many versions of windows and only had my own personal experience with how frustrating they could be, but that was my first glimpse into everyone else being pissed off at Microsoft.

  32. PartPrisonPartHome

This thing saved my PC after I updated from Windows XP. Windows 8 (not 8.1) worked a much faster 😀

  33. theh0tt0pic

Me was legit the worse. People said 10 was bad at first too, how many people said “I’ll give up 7 with cold dead hands” lol. It’s every cycle man. Lol

  34. IknowRedstone

Windows 8 is where they started to remove features

  35. LexTheGayOtter

Windows kinda had a reputation for every other operating system being hot garbage since at least the 2000s lol. They make a new OS thats garbage then they release a new one based heavily on that OS later

    ME to XP

    Vista to 7

    8 to 10

    11 to ???

The reason 11 is worse than the others is by the time the last good OS went EOL, the new good one was out but that doesn’t seem like its going to be the case

  36. planedrop

Windows 11 is actually really good.

I still fucking hate it, but it’s good at it’s core. Microsoft just needs to stop with the nonsense and bloat and focus on stability again.

Also worth noting Windows 8.1 was actually really good at it’s core, the UI was trash, but it was damn stable.

  37. ostrieto17

I actually enjoyed the start menu being tiles and have been using that function ever since, I just put everything I need there and my desktop is free of clutter but that’s just me I know it’s all subjective.

  38. Thewaltham

Those saying 8 is the worst windows must be also very young.

    Right?

    Right…?

  39. Slazagna

I don’t understand the win 8 start screen hate. It is quite literally just a full screen start menu that functions almost exactly like a win 10 or 11 start menu functionally. You can pin / remove whatever stiff you want to it, create groups, or search / open an all apps screen.

People are literally upset over *checks notes, “fullscreen”.
