There are exciting games. There are challenging games. And then, there are games which seems to just hate the player. As you get older like I am (early 40s), you start to realize that you don't have the nerve or the energy to be too much stressed out by a game. There are already bills to pay, deadlines to meet, a family to take care of, so I usually prefer not to add to my already high, stress level.
But even as a young gamer, sometimes games would just become too much. Games like Amnesia or outlast can be too scary for many people. Others are just too hard and need a lots of energy and mental resilience. But to be totally frank I found the brutal RNG and permadeaths to be the worst stress factors in a game. maybe that's why I have never managed to beat darkest dungeon or battle brothers.
Have you ever gave up a game you loved only because you found it too stressful?

Screenshot is from battle brothers for those masochistic enough to try it!
When was this screenshot taken, ive played battle brothers 500 hours and never saw this appearance on squeletons.
And i guess the Pathologics games were too much for me.
Resident Evil 2 was that way for me
Spore. Planets with Terra Index 0. Their ambient, hostile environment and lack of any life was terrifying for me as a kid.
Almost all online games. Either the other players are idiots or the game wants constant grinding 🙄
Ecco the dolphin
Silent Hill 1 and 2 as a 12ish year old
Warhammer: Dark Omen , imagine playing a Total War battle without being able to pause
Shogun 2: Total War Multiplayer, for the reason above
Darkest Dungeon, just got too much in the end
Bloodborne. Months later I found a YouTuber who was great at telling the tips so I ended up platinuming it. It was still somewhat stressful so I didn’t buy the DLC though.
2 games come to mind. Resident Evil 7, it was just anxiety the whole way through. Moreso than any other game in the series.
and Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp. Its a legitimately difficult game where many levels an go south if you have just one really bad turn.
Alien: Isolation
I can deal with horror. I can deal with gore. I can’t deal with having to hide from something I barely ever see. Awesome game but it was too intense for me.
Just any kind of tactics, sim management, something where I basically have to control more than just one character. My mind melts.
All souls games
Ninia Gaiden Sigma, any PVP game
Online games where the only fun you can have is by winning, such as LoL
I prefer Battle Royales because I can chat and laugh with my friends during the (usually long) calm moments without fights.
Darkest dungeon, too many characters has many negative traits, and I felt sad my units dies permanently 😭
Elden Ring. Love the overall theme of the game and the lore, but the unsettling feeling of the open world made me stop altogether. Maybe this is silly, but it was top eerie for me.
Brawlhalla 🤧
Sea of stars, as an autistic with cognitive reaction speed issues it was just too much. And no the assist items didn’t work, leaving aside the fact you have to sacrifice an item slot for it. I can’t say I loved it but it had potential.
Outer Wilds.
I don’t know what it is with this game, but having played through numerous horror games from Silent Hill series to Amnesia and Outlast, the sense of absolute *dread* I feel playing Outer Wilds is unmatched.
Which is a shame, as I actually want to play through this game. I just can’t.
I played Day Z 10-12 years ago or so. It was the most stressful game I ever played.
any horror game lol
Polybius
the new silent hill game, love the horror genre but the silent hill setting is just too good loved playing it but my god my heart couldn’t take it
Battle brothers
Darkest Dungeon
All the multiplayer games.
darkest dungeon. 🙁
such a great and fun game, but id spend hours and hours leveling up my dudes only for them to start going fking crazy, stealing all my loot, saying crazy things and making the rest of the squad utterly paranoid and go crazy themselves.
hard game. lol.
