>Following the reveal of Nintendo’s new game-key cards during its Nintendo Switch 2 event last week, we’re finally getting more details about why they exist and how they can be used. Although they don’t contain a physical copy of a game, Nintendo’s Tetsuya Sasaki explained to GameSpot that game-key cards aren’t permanently tied to a specific Nintendo account. The games can be inserted and played on any Switch 2 console, allowing them to be borrowed, rented, and even resold.
>“So key cards will start up on the console or system that it is slotted into, so it’s not tied to an account or anything,” said Sasaki.

I thought it would require the cartridge to be inserted

I give it 3 months until a critical update nerfs this and there’s some kind of account registration games are tied to

Literally the biggest misinformation and overreaction I’ve seen. Do people expect call of duty when it comes to switch 2 to be on the fucking cart. Its like 200gb. Same with many other massive games. This is literally a perfect solution.

So the game installs to the console once you insert the cartridge, but you need to have the cartridge inserted to play the game? Isn’t that the same as how PlayStation and Xbox handle discs?

And how long will this feature be supported for? They close down online stores eventually. Resale value of these cards should tank.
My kids can still play old games on other consoles. But downloadable content from the wii store? Wii u? Eventually the ps3 store as well, currently the longest running.
I want to be able to store my games for the long term. If they are worried about the size of games fitting into the switch they could have provided a larger disk drive.
But a 1tb micro sd card isn’t the end of the world either, most games don’t take up 200gb of space.
I am guessing this is just about publishers getting to save money because express micro sd cards aren’t cheap at all. Nintendo probably have access to something with close to zero space that just acts to minimise piracy, which costs a fraction of anything with actual storage space.
I am guessing no developer will be willing to have 20$ of their game cost going into the cartridge alone – so probably every switch 2 game from now on will be a download only game?

Still bit sceptical that IF the potential license can be revoked as in “the game can’t be downloaded and/or you dont own it anymore”.
Like I’m not expecting that Nintendo’s own games will have that happen but I’m gonna be fairly sure we’re gonna see *once or twice* news about some company bricking game at some point. Or 3rd party accounts tying “the key” to *that account*
But id be glad to be proven wrong on this one

so physical digital game-sharing without the game being account locked if I’m getting that right correct me if I’m wrong

What about just putting the whole game on the gamecart so we can play them after the switch servers go down? Especially considering 256gb of storage is quite meager.
