
I broke my ankle really bad and decided to make myself feel better by overhauling my rig while recovering from surgery. It was already pretty capable (5800x and 3060 Ti), I just wanted good native 4k performance given I'm a tv couch gamer.
Sooo now have a 7800x3d (Microcenter bundle made it like $200), a 7900 XTX (like new for $700), 32gb DDR5 6000, an AIO for the cpu, and a 1000w PSU…oh, and a 65 inch 144hz qled TV with Freesync Premium (Hisense QD7, only $495, it's incredible)…
I'm just blown away…no wonder GPU sales are down. Why would I need to upgrade this for the next 8 odd years? It's an absolute monster.
4k 80fps is like the minimum performance I get with this…stuff like Doom Eternal with RT on runs so much faster than even my new TV can display.
Playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora with ray tracing maxed at 4k90 has been the most jaw-dropping gaming experience of my life. It often looks better than the movies…and goes to show that new gen AMD cards can chew through a very high RT workload when devs care to optimize their games. Of course Alan Wake 2 is an exception, but that game (and Hellblade 2, tbh) are in my opinion quite boring and optimized by drugged monkeys, so nothing lost there. Snowdrop engine (when optimized, unlike SW Outlaws) looks arguably even better than UE5 and runs like butter.
Rant aside, I'm mystified by how powerful this is. I spent half my life (38 yo) shooting for 1024×768 and happy with 20fps, so this has all been a 'died and gone to heaven' type experience. We can have our problems with the games industry, but just saying we should be so thankful to have all this horsepower under the hood!

I think it boils down to what you said “when devs care to optimize”, now a days devs just use a given game engine and don’t optimize it well to their needs. That’s how you get games running shitty on great hardware.

My first gaming experience on the PC was the original DOS Test Drive in 4 colors so it’s just been uphill from there.

i never really had “that” kind of money until the pandemic money. I went from a 1070 non TI to a 3090 ti and the card is going to be 2 years ago that i bought it and it still amazes me running at 3440×1440 @ 165hz
lucky for me my wife is into PC gaming and wants my card so i might be getting a new 5000 series yay.
Avatar gameplay is eh, but it looks stunning in HDR, I played it just for the scenery.

I got my first PC earlier in the year with a 4080 super and can run literally any game that I want at 4K 60fps+ some games like CP2077 and Alan Wake 2 need a few small tweaks to get running smoothly but other than that I’ve loved every single second of it, going from PS5 to a PC is a game changer

Yeah I built an in-between “mid-range” and it just crushed all the games at 1440p right now. Not only that but I can do so many things while I’m gaming. l’m watching YouTube while looking at discord while gaming while checking my email while coding while running a VM of windows, while running Linux apps via WSL, etc etc.
And not a hiccup. Super smooth. I’m really impressed with the power of these parts on the market right now. The human is the limiting factor now.
I had a more expensive cutting-edge PC in the mid 2000s and it would struggle with one cutting-edge game. Multitasking was possible of course but you had to tradeoff performance to do so with maybe just two apps depending on what they were.
Plus you had to upgrade every 3 years or so at least if you really wanted to keep up. PCs these days can last 8 years if you need it to.

Because games will increasingly assume you have this level of compute and be more demanding and less optimized. Reducing the benefits over time.

I had two 8800 GTXs back in 2006 for 1,499 each… I’m now using a vega 56 from 2017 on a ryz 7 3800x , 32gb DDR4, I got the gpu for 200 then and just now thinking about upgrading to a 3060 rtx to match the rest of my machine that’s been held back by the vega (which is quite capable still today)
The real question is what’s the response time of your new-fangled TV?

imagine my “wow” levels after going from an ATI HD4530 256MB to an 750ti 4GB. Nothing has felt like that upgrade.
I have a tv and ultrawide monitor that are both OLED. Sometimes upgrading your peripherals will give you the reason to also upgrade your computer, then the cycle repeats.
As always it really depends on the games you play. Boot up something like path traced cyberpunk or Allan Wake 2 and it’ll bring your system down to its knees.
As far as upgrading goes, im personally holding off because of prices. Back when a mid range gpu was $300 I could justify upgrading every 2-3 years. Now my 3070 cost me damn near $700 after tax and shipping back in 2021 and im holding on to it till the wheels fall off. Probably won’t upgrade till 2026. Dlss goes brr.
Mr first GPU was a GeForce in my Dell in 2002. Allowed me to run Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind at 1024×768. I am now very old…

Imho the power of the GPU really depends on the game, my 4080 can curbstomp most games @4k60 then some are either optimized so badly or have “future proof” settings and just humble it,
If most games were actually optimized well I’d assume with dlss and such we’d be able to keep these current cards for years to come, sadly with new gpus already on the horizon you can bet games will be built just well enough to run on those with a heaping of AI nonsense,

Yo I remember upgrading from a 2011 office work laptop o bought for college to an actual desktop system in 2013. Went from laprop integrated graphics to a gtx 650. What an incredible overhaul in performance.
I went from 10-12 fps in guild wars 2, up to 60 over night. It was over a 400% performance increase according to user benchmark. I was running intel HD 3000 integrated graphics. Even modern integrated graphics (intels UHD 770) are only 7% below a gtx 650.
Then in years past, I went from the 650 to a 770, then from 770 to a 980. Held onto that 980 for a long while. Went from the 980 to a 3070ti. And now im sitting on a 3090.

Because devs are gonna continue to pump out poorly optimized games and rely on daddy nvidia’s dlss/frame gen technology to save them. They’re going to claim that it’s ‘because their graphics are that good’ when in fact they just suck at their jobs.
