This is a long but very worthwhile and interesting read. One very eye opening tidbit of info was about all the T-Poses we saw at launch which happened as an alternative to the game crashing.

There is no doubt that CDPR put the work in to fix the game and ultimately this is one of the all time best sci-fi RPGs.

Please don’t abbreviate Cyberpunk to CP

  2. WaferBrilliant

    HANK!!!!!
    DON’T ABREVIATE CYBERPUNK!!!

  3. fuzzyborne

It’s an absolute masterpiece now, but I’m not sure how accurate it is to say they saved the game from a disastrous launch. The launch was an unmitigated disaster.

  4. Brilliant-Object-922

What’s a disgusting title who wants save CP 🤢🤮

  5. Varadharavi

Cyberpunk definitely worth all the praise it can get. It takes immense courage and determination to face the backlash and fix all your mistakes to come back stronger than before.

  6. EarthInfern0

Note that this is an article by a site that was nowhere near critical enough of the game on launch interviewing staff who are pushing a redemption narrative. Don’t believe too much of this hype, this is only part of a story that suits both of these groups. The tl;dr is that no one of any importance at cdpr played the game on anything less than a top end gaming pc and assumed this was everyone’s experience. Costly mistake.

  7. Kami_Slayer2

Honestly the community doing a complete 180 and loving cdpr like they’re the most great gaming company in the world is exactly why these companies keep releasing broken dogshit and fixing it later with dlc.

  8. The launch was a disaster. Period. They failed miserably to save the launch. What they DID do is make history for one of the greatest turn arounds in gaming history. Continuous updates, listening to fan feedback, and relentless passion for making it right, took a broken / incomplete game and made it one of the best games ever made. This is a fact. If you have never played Cyberpunk and picked it up today with the DLC you are getting one of the best video game experiences of today.

  9. op, for future reference, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT ABBREVIATE CYBERPUNK!

I’m somehow still a little mad that they really only focus on the technical side of things and pat themselves on the back for their writing. There were many things wrong in that area as well. Tonally the game was wildly inconsistent, a lot of the humor was straight up clownish, super rushed introduction to that brand new universe and to V’s Story.

And it just wasn’t as well written as the Witcher 3 in general.

Phantom Liberty was as significant of a step up on that side as it was on the gameplay side imo.

Tbf, they didn’t really have a choice. They had to save it, otherwise they lose one of the few sources of income that they have. It’s not like they have some live service that’s producing a constant stream of money.

However, it was their leadership decision to release it in an unfinished state in the first place, so they were fixing the problem that they themselves created.

  12. The launch was wildly divisive.

Consoles were a technical mess, PC was split between “not what I expected”, “technical issues” and “I just play and I like it”

Steam user reviews which are known to attract negative feedback were majorily positive back then.

    First off:

    * The fact that CDPR actually called a duck a duck and fixed the game is a major bonus in their favor. A lot of studios will say *anything* other than admitting something was done wrong. This is points in CDPR’s favor.
    * We all agree CDPR dropped the ball on launch. But they dropped the ball and picked it back up again. Many, many have dropped the ball and left it there. The project gets cut and then they move on. CDPR instead fixed their game. This is points in CDPR’s favor.
    * CDPR is still relatively young as far as developers go; I would argue Witcher 3 and 2077 were their only AAA titles. Still not that great of a reason, but minor points in CDPR’s favor.
    * The fact that they saved the game sold them millions of copies, sold Phantom Liberty millions of copies, and now they get to make sequels. (All hail Orion!) This is points in CDPR’s favor.

All things considered, yes, CDPR dropped the ball on launch. But they recovered in a near-uniquely excellent way. I think CDPR is one of the best big-budget developers out there right now.

  14. GhostRiders

I mean yeah, CDPR really pulled the cat out of the bag and not only fixed the game but continued to make it better until it has to be considered one of the best games ever made up to this point but saved it from a disastrous launch… No.

No matter how good Cyberpunk is now, it will always be famous for having one of the worst game launches of all time.

I mean jesus Sony pulled it from their store and CDPR paid out millions in refunds.

That is not saving it from a disastrous launch lol

I play CP 2077 since release and still playing (PS4 Pro when game was released and PS5 now). Have CD version so played even when game was out of PS Store for fixes. Never remember critical bugs people claimed on internet that made me stop playing. I think it’s because I personally prefer story plot and indulgence some small graphic issues that will not block game progress.

  17. BowsetteGoneBananas

They didn’t save shit from a disastrous launch. Cyberpunk’s launch was a disastrous embarrassment.

  18. I’m not saying that they did that on purpose but what is more cyberpunk than been scammed by a corpo for greed reasons and left with unusable cyberware

  19. L34dP1LL

I see that they mention Edgerunners in passing, and it does it a disservice. It generated a TON of goodwill and interest towards the game, and kinda kept the game relevant while it went through 1.0 to 2.0

  20. Saved from launch ? Bro y’all are short minded or what

  21. ThisIsTheNewSleeve

Yes I agree CDPR was ultimately able to save the game. It’s still not perfect, but it’s still pretty great. But I wish I had not played this game until right now. If so I probably would have given it a 10/10 and been blown away in every way.

As it is however, having put in so much of my time into it when it was NOT in a good state, I’m kind of burnt out on Cyberpunk in general and feel I can’t enjoy it as much as I should simply because of the hours I’ve put in.

  22. krose1980

My game still crashes at start! Every 4 launches 3 crashes.

  23. millenniumsystem94

Still drove at least two developers to the point that they tried to off themselves. As much as I love the game I can’t imagine someone dying just because their boss says it needs to get made and released on time.

  24. EVILFLUFFMONSTER

The biggest save wasn’t just the game, but their reputation. Gamers don’t forget, we had games like Anthem and Marvels Avengers and only Cyberpunk managed to not only save it’s reputation, but be regarded as excellent.

People loved CDPR after the Witcher series, and Cyberpunk nearly ruined all that good will.

Like I was a little soured towards Bioware after Anthem, even if they knock it out the park with Dragonage Veilguard, Ill still be nervous about Mass Effect 4.

  25. Chaosrealm69

OP, never ever shorten Cyberpunk to those letters.

Yes I agree that CDPR did a hell of a lot of good work to get Cyberpunk 2077 into the magnificent game it is today, but for the love of all, never ever use those two letters to refer to it again.

  26. GamiNami

I guess I should feel lucky in that when the game came out, I purchased it immediately, but still had a backlog of other games to complete. Many hours went into finishing off a bunch if games, making me forget Cyberpunk for a few years until Phantom Liberty was announced, and I had just build a new PC. So I was able to jump into one of gaming hest experiences with very little frustration.
