It may be a piece of shit, but I bet you this piece of shit is easier to fix than most laptops in it’s range when new. It has upgradable ram and storage, not that it really matters anyway. Maybe an upgradable cpu too.
But yeah, it’s still a piece of shit. Get him a second hand 5yo Thinkpad or Probook or Lattitude and he’ll be good for a few more years of basic use, with a much lighter and better built laptop.

Its a pretty old system but can still run decently with Windows 10 or Linux after a couple upgrades. Assuming everything works.
First is to replace the hard drive with an SSD. I have bought many Silicon Power 256GB 2.2″ SSDs off Amazon. They are cheap and perfect for upgrading old systems.
The next things is the RAM. You will have to check the tech specs to see what the maximum RAM is. It may be 2x2GB or 2x4GB. I have bought Duomeiqi (spelling?) off Amazon and they have served me well. You can also see if you can rip some old RAM out of a junk laptop at a recycling place. 8 is ideal but 4 can still get the job done.
If it needs a battery, check iFixit to see if they have one. If not, then you can get a cheap battery off Amazon as well.
