Just saw this post pop up in my marketplace. They want $150 for this game that is… still in circulation, isn't it? Am I crazy for thinking this is absolutely absurd, or do collectors actually care about having a minted rating for a video game? I feel like the biggest percentage of the reason why you buy it so you can play it, but maybe that's just me.

Game and movie grading is a scam to prey on idiots.

As a collector…not really? It tends to be more of a scam to add extra price to people who aren’t very knowledgeable about collecting. 90% of older games being sold nowdays are WAY overpriced, and this is just more ways to take advantage of the market. Minted ratings from some group weren’t even really a thing when I helped write a collector’s guide 20 years ago. You do have grades just like cards but not over the top like they get now. If I was going to sell my factory sealed Super 3d Noah’s ark I wouldn’t need some other group giving a rating to sell it for what it is worth and call it mint.

  3. I think the whole thing is silly, even for older games, but this one is pretty wild. Sure, I’d like my game cases not to look like they’ve been used as a replacement soccer ball. Still not going to get them graded and pretend that somehow ups the value.

Some game collectors do value modern games being in mint condition or graded for the sake of completeness and preservation. However, the level of importance placed on this may vary among collectors based on personal preferences and the specific focus of their collection.

It’s just the 17th century Dutch tulip speculative bubble, but with a 21st century glow-up.

  6. blackhawks-fan

I don’t buy graded games because you can’t play them.

Personally not really – as long as the physical box isn’t a complete disaster usually I’m feeling good about it. I definitely don’t need like, highest level grading or anything, the reason I’m getting the game is to play it, not to let it sit on the shelf and never be used.

For Modern stuff there isn’t a lot to ‘collect’ either, they don’t have instruction books or cool knick-knacks these days with the games unless you’re buying the super high end collectors versions, which I generally don’t care about.

No game grading is basically just beanie babies for the modern age

Companies try to basically convince people that old games are worth more still sealed and whatnot but most collectors do not care about that

They are not collecting them just for the sake of owning them They are collecting them because of the nostalgia associated with them and most of them actually want to play the games they collect

The few people that don’t are just the people that were tricked into believing that these things would somehow make them money one day

  9. You know, I’m something of a collector myself.

I own exactly zero graded games in a collection somewhere around 2000. I still like them to be in great condition, but I’d never rely on a “professional” grading company to score one. That’s shit is nuts.

If you pay extra money for any graded game you’re a fool.

  11. 1LakeShow7

People like this have no soul and dont pew pew 🐍🐍🐍

  12. Grading is stupid and people shouldn’t fall for the scam it is.

I’m typically happy with getting a most games in their original cases, though complete-in-box is always nice. However, I’ll almost always buy loose NES / SNES / N64 games: those thin cardboard boxes weren’t meant for being every-day storage, and I feel like they’re about to rip or bend every time I open them.

  14. Here_For_Work_

For a modern game? No. I would imagine there’s a retro gaming collectors community where grading may make more sense.

  15. Gumbercules81

😆 on a game that came out very recently

  16. RubyJuneRocket

lol game grading is such a sucker’s… game

  17. ManyInterests

Same thing could be said of comic books, trading cards, etc.

It’s obviously of value to some people. But plenty of people collect these things in all kinds of conditions.

  18. pokematic

People don’t care about grading. I’m a collector and I don’t care (I kind of like sealed, but only when I bought from major retailers). Pat the NES Punk, one of the most well known NES collector, says it’s lame. I’ve been to many retro game stores, including ones that pride themselves on being “for serious collectors,” and they don’t have any graded games (I think I’ve seen 1 “in the wild” ever, and it was for “something serious” like Little Samson). A guy I follow on youtube that made an entire channel about collecting nintendo games and consoles said he doesn’t care.

People care about condition (good quality label is better than scuffed label, which is better than sun faded label, which is better than torn label, which is better than no label at all; original undamaged case is better than original damaged case, which is better than generic case with all artwork transferred, which is better than no case at all), but no one cares about “this game is graded at 80 so it’s worth more than the game rated at 78.”

As a collector of classic games, I share your feelings about listing a title that’s still available for such an absurd price. That’s ridiculous.

I’d pay $79.99, in most cases, to get the game *at* *retail*. Why should I pay $150 for a grading sticker?

  20. Thrillhouse138

I don’t care. I collect to play on original hardware. Emulation is awesome too.

  21. InhaledPack5

Never saw why stuff mattered being sealed.

I’m buying the game to play it so i’m just gonna remove the seal anyways lol

  22. headbanger1186

Anyone that pays to get their games graded is stupid and deserves to lose their money.

  23. respondin2u

Maybe if it’s old but grading modern games (or cards, comic books, etc) isn’t worth the money or effort unless it’s something very rare and you plan on selling it.

  24. sunnysurfer101MA

Can any mod explain to me why my post about grading games was taken down when this post is still up? I’m not even mad at OP, I’m genuinely curious

  25. HaikuArtist

It is wild. I saw one for a Deadpool game for PS4 going for hundreds.

I don’t have a stance on grading, but if I were to collect, I’d prefer those retro, rare, hard to find cartridges. Games on CD doesn’t appeal to me much. I like that nostalgic tech and feel of cartridge games.

  26. CruffTheMagicDragon

It’s one thing to grade trading cards since they’re sort of art pieces but slabbing up a product that is meant to be handled and enjoyed like a game or comic book is asinine

  27. ChronoVulpine

I don’t. I’m just happy to have the jrpg.

  28. Dude, I saw that same posting. I just laughed at it. So fucking stupid. Grading games is just another reason why gaming has become a rip off, but you’re fucking grading a plastic case?!

I can’t wait for this fad to die.

  29. sometipsygnostalgic

They only need one person to fall for the scam

  30. Andokai_Vandarin667

XD for the switch version? I could see that for snes original. Or more.

  31. How in the actual fuck be grading Switch games? The cases are interchangeable. It’s a cartridge the size of a penny. What the hell am I missing?

  32. SilkyBowner

Who ever paid to get this graded is an idiot and whoever buys it is an even bigger idiot.
