I didn’t think it was so serious

People care when their machine can actually do it. Otherwise no.

  2. RabidTurtl

When I watched videos of it, it seemed really amazing. A real step forward in graphics.

Playing games, I turn it off. Dont notice it at all while playing (I know its there, but when playing a game I just dont care about it) and rather have a fps increase.

  3. NotJustBibbit

I am happy with 60fps as long as my game LOOKS amazing. I do not care about really high frame rates in the slightest so yes I want ray tracing

Sincerely – a guy who cannot even run any modern games without an immediate crash

  4. nekrovulpes

I think it’s being heavily pushed by the industry because it saves developers time, not because it’s a step forward in fidelity.

That in itself is a good thing realistically, but the tech has a long way to go before they should be expecting consumers to fully adopt it. It’s simply too demanding for now.

  5. Didn’t care for the longest time and then figured I’d give it a try in Forza horizon 5 and absolutely love it.

Hoping to use it anytime I can moving forward.

  6. sirflappington

At least in Cyberpunk, it’s actually beautiful. Definitely not high on the list of priorities though.

I didn’t care about it when I had a 2070. I tried it a few times and I was like “wow this is not worth the framerate loss”

I got a 4070ti super and it runs things drastically better, I tried RTX a few times with the game I had before and was like “Wow, it’s really not that much different and it’s still not worth the framerate loss!”

Eventually it’ll be a nice, not expensive feature. But as it stands? Environments in games are designed without RTX because they know it’s not a feature everyone uses. So without RTX, areas are artistically done with intention and look great without RTX.

RTX absolutely can enhance some things, but IDK maybe it’s the artist in me- when something is done with intent it works better than adding something in later.

Edit: I didn’t expect my comment to get so many replies.
Y’all, RTX is nice, I’ve tried it with a few games (Ratchet and Clank, Cyberpunk, Amid Evil, Doom Eternal, Darktide. Quake 2, etc) and yes the visuals look nice but I will always prioritize framerate. I don’t need ultra-realistic visuals to get immersed, I get immersed just as well in a cell shaded game or pixel art game.

Raytracing is not ever going to make me take the performance hit that it currently needs. It’s not worth it to me. If it is to you? Awesome! Enjoy.

some of us use ray tracing. its fun… if you have a 4090

  9. juanldeaza

I never use it. 4070ti capable but it’s mehhhh

  10. MandiocaGamer

oh! looks cool!… *proceed to disable it

  11. DaRainHD

I don’t even use ray tracing I prefer frames over super fancy graphics

  12. SignalGladYoung

Answer is YES. RT is game changer if devs impement it well. Elden Ring RT for example is SHIAT!

  13. ThisDumbApp

I think people will care a LOT about RT in another two generations, like the 6000 RTX or 9000 Radeon options, hopefully by then, seeing how game development has been going, we will have cards that can run it much much better without turning the game into a slideshow without frame gen and upscaling and the highest GPU in the stack.

  14. underkappa

I ran Doom RTX and it was awesome. Didn’t turn on raytracing ever since for anything

  15. Creepernom

These comments really show how disconnected this community is from the average player

  16. Crafted_Mecke

Heck yeah, seems to be a “just me” thing but if I play games like Cyberpunk or Battlefield 1 and I see that crisp reflection in windows or puddles I’m always looking at it, it’s just a piece of technology that keeps amazing me.

Just like in this Trailer from 2019 it still gets me somehow:

  17. Amilo159

I tried it in cyberpunk and MechWarrior 5. I liked the implementation in cp2077, especially the realistic shadows and reflections, even at medium preset. But with RT off and high/ultra settings the game looked just as good, but ran noticably faster.

MW5 RT was a huge letdown. Slightly better reflections in very few and lighting for nearly 60% performance drop. Choice wasn’t even remotely hard.

  18. Rubihno194

My fps goes below sea level when I put ray-tracing on in Cyberpunk so turned it off but put almost all other settings on high. There’s probably a difference but the game still looks awesome without it anyway

I’d probably use it if I had a pc that could handle it tho cause why not, but it’s not needed to make the game pretty (in Cyberpunks case atleast)

  19. sixcylindersofdoom

If your rig can run it smoothly without sacrificing other settings, then it’s nice. Definitely more of a “that’s neat” thing for me vs a must have.

  20. Sinbad1999

I didn’t have a ray tracing capable gpu for about 5 years (5700xt in 2019) and when I upgraded to a 4070ti super it’s a lot of fun to message around with the ray tracing technologies I wasn’t able to enjoy. And I find it really impressive over screen space reflections. Of course if I’m playing a competitive fast pace game and it supports ray tracing, I’m turning it off but a story game that doesn’t require much thinking, I’ll turn it on

  21. OfficialZygorg

First, get the game to run smoothly at the refresh rate of my monitor, then, up the graphics till everything goes to shit. repeat till you have good fps and wathever graphics.

  22. Marty5020

I like it, but I like high frame rates more. With a 3060 laptop that just ain’t gonna happen.

  23. learning2fly42

3070, I’ve tried it in multiple games and the only one I’ve felt was really worth it was Cyberpunk 2077. Most stuff isn’t designed with it in mind so it isn’t worth the dip. I’m sure I’m another 2-3 years when the tech is more mainstream it’ll be amazing but it’s still kinda an after thought in most games instead of a truly fleshed out system.

  24. EscapeTheBlank

I played through the entire Cyberpunk 2077 main game with Path Tracing/DLSS/FG on 1080p with a teeny weeny 4060 card, and it was amazing. In the PL expansion, however, it struggles with raytracing just in general, so yeah it’s best to turn it off if it hinders your immersion or whatever.

  25. Ray tracing is the future but it’s very taxing

Personally I prefer FPS > graphics.

  26. non-yourbusiness

Ofcourse, it’s really nice for renders or just screen shots of certain games. Also driving around in cyberpunk and taking it all in is just really nice. Sometimes it’s just the wow factor and other times it’s for art, competitive games don’t need RT in it’s current state but in the future might give you an advantage by showing you reflections of other players in reflective surfaces and the pixel perfect shadows and lighting can help you pin point where someone is.

  27. Ganda1fderBlaue

I use it when I can but i probably wouldn’t spot a difference if I’m being honest

  28. jack-of-some

Entirely dependent on what that means. I like raytraced reflections mostly because I hate screen space reflections. The only games where those actually work is racing games. If I had the choice I’d just turn reflections off instead of using screen space but so many modern games don’t have the option.

  29. Oblivion2550

Only if it makes a difference in graphics like Control or cyberpunk 2077. Otherwise it’s nice to have but not necessary to enjoy the games.

  30. Literally_Dogwater69

I use ray tracing on my “break games”

So basically a break game is when I’m so fucking sick of Call of Duty that I find some games just to chill on.

Stuff like Dying Light 1/2, BF2042, BFV, just stuff where I can have mindless fun.

Do I NEED ray tracing? Absolutely fucking not. Would I buy a Nvidia card just so I can have RT when I’m fed up of Call of Booty? Yes.

  31. Asleeper135

With high end GPUs it tends to be worth it. Without RT a 4090 runs most games at what I consider to be arbitrarily fast frame rates, and I suspect a 4080 or 7900 XTX would be the same. RT performance is the only differentiating those cards in my eyes, so if I were trying to decide between a 4080 super and 7900 XTX it wouldn’t be a hard choice for me. Even at a lower price the 7900 XTX would really be lacking value compared to the 4080 super for me unless it was on a serious discount.

  32. Ok-Marionberry4061

It makes reflective surfaces especially water look 1000 times better and more realistic.

I’d rather get 60 or 120fps (if possible) but in a game where performance hit is negligible 100% leaving RT on and turning down other sliders.

  33. Clean_Perception_235

Seeing a lot of 4090’s saying yes in the comments.

  34. Temporary_Hospital17

Makes things look nice, but definitely not worth chopping down yhe performance for it

  35. I love it when it’s done right, it’s absolutely amazing in some games but some games also do amazing baked lighting but in motion it’s hard to beat RT.

The Cyberpunk DLC looked absolutely amazing with it on.

But to each their own. I’m not a twitch gamer, I like story based games and racing games and I love it when they look amazing. Especially with racing games, the closer it gets to looking like I’m there the better.

  36. Mega-Skyxer

I don’t, since I think it looks gaudy as hell & worsens performance.

  37. I have a 4070ti super and I don’t give a shit about ray tracing, never have. Other methods of lighting run much better and look 95% as good. There’s just no point to it. Maybe in the future if there’s some sort of cool mechanic or feature of a game that utilizes raytracing then it could be cool. But to me a game with and without raytracing is no different. I’d rather take the game at 90 fps no RTX instead of RTX and like 60 or less.

  38. Winter-Investment620

Own GPU that can easily do ray tracing, turn if off, turn most settings down while keeping textures at max, enjoy high framerates with great visuals. shrug.

  39. prombloodd

Sorry guys, ray tracing (realtime ray tracing rendering) is still a gimmick.
