It’s a tough economy so we shall see how long it takes for them to put a sale on it.

When he said that game was historically accurate then showed those “giant enemy crabs”, damn near dropped and broke my DS.

The one value proposition that the PS3 had at that time was being about 30% cheaper than the available Blu-Ray players of the time.

They have to make back the $100 Million they lost on Concord

  5. I remember being hyped about whole 60GB of storage.

That’s like literally a single game now.

  6. magnidwarf1900

I mean sure it’s not the 1st time they got absolutely blasted for absurd pricing

  7. BeefyStudGuy

Dang, I wish the Canadian dollar was that close to the USD still.

OP doesn’t know. This was the BEST priced Blu-Ray player in consumer electronics. You also got a game console for free.

  9. BetterAir7

They also gave us many games
    but PS5 Pro?

Will they provide us with their O’lreliable, Concord?

I got one when they released because it had the blu-ray player included which was a great deal tbh

This came to mind immediately as well, but looking back and considering this was for a brand new console launch that came packaged with a Blu-ray drive, compared to today’s announcement of a mid-cycle launch of an updated console with a disc drive sold separately priced even higher? Lol Sony is trippin’

I don’t really have console allegiance. I’ll happily bounce from one brand to the next. I still assume I’ll grab a PS6 next Gen but if this Sony is back I’ll grab a NextXbox just as easily.

The way Sony has been in the past year really reminds of how they were back then. Hopefully we’re reaching a turning point.

I worked at BestBuy when the 360, Wii, and PS3 launched. We had campers and lines for the 360 and Wii midnight releases. Like 6 people showed up for the PS3, the launch was an utter disaster. And at least the PS3 had cool tech like Blu-ray and hardware backwards compatibility. The PS5 pro has very little to offer.

    $600 in 2006 is worth approximately $936 in 2024.

I swear I have Deja vu every other year when people kick and scream about a new console price only to sell them out overnight and have them on back order for a year. I’m not saying the price is right, but people in the gaming community really have a hard time voting with their wallets.

  17. RoomBroom2010

At the time, buying a PS3 was cheaper than buying a BluRay player and it was also a BluRay player…. so I’m not so certain that that one was that over priced.

  18. WannabeAby

that was a new gen being revealed… Not the second version of the same gen. And you will note that it has the hard drive included 😀

  19. People laugh at the grudge and try to defend Sony but to this day $600 for the PS3 was not only high but Sony literally advertised it as a console you’d want to work a second job / more hours for and would easily last 10 years.. Like the sheer audacity to tell gamers “it’s ok you poors get a second or third job to buy our over priced plastic george foreman grill that will be out classed by PCs within 6 months”

And a ten year life span sounds good on paper but most folks after like five or six years max are already wanting the next console gen, the newest features etc But mainly the price and their snobbery was just golden.

  20. “You’ll want to get two jobs just to buy it.”

  21. gideon513

Why are you trying to normalize it? That’s what they want you to do.

  22. RIPN1995

In hindsight this was not the worst hardware reveal.

  23. CrimsonFatalis8

This is ignoring the fact the average Blu Ray player cost around a grand at the time, and this was half the price, along with being able to play games from the last two generations as well as new ones. This is a steal by comparison. The ps5 pro doesn’t even come with a disc drive.

  24. Rock--Lee

To be fair, the PS3 was still sold at a loss. It cost around $800 to produce each console, mainly due to its Blu-ray player and CELL architecture. So lower than $600 would be a very hard to make up with game sales at launch.

But this time around, they have huge margins for sure.

  25. Wrathful_Scythe

And now we watch Bloodborne Remastered be announced and PS5 Pro exclusive. *(Only for PS4 emulation become stable enough for BB on PC at 60fps when it releases)*

The PS4 Pro had at least a sliver of a reason to exist with many games barely reaching 30 fps. This ones just hot garbage.

  26. moodswung

I laughed out loud when I read the ability to play Blu-ray Discs was an Add-on at this already crazy price.

  27. blackmooer

To be fair, the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-ray player at the time, it also had multiple USB ports, memory card slots, and hardware backwards compatibility for PS2 games. To me that was still a better deal.

  28. Agghyson

I’m betting they saw how much money the scalpers were making and decided to get a cut.
