Even this gen has no xx30 or xx50 desktop card. It’s almost like they’ve *allegedly and independently* decided to split the market between them. The only one really trying to compete is Intel.
Otherwise, for most price tiers, it’s been that Nvidia decides the price and performance target, and AMD just slots in slightly below it. Not trying to shake up the market with amazing value at launch, but taking advantage of Nvidia pushing the upper limits of what buyers are willing to pay at each tier, while Nvidia takes some flak and yet somehow maintains a huge market share.
Then you wait a few months after release. AMD price slides down. People say it’s a great value and forget the MSRP / RRP. Rinse. Repeat.

I just want a solid midrange card thats at too good a price to refuse. Id rather upgrade midrange cards more frequently than hold a high end for twice the length. I read the interview with thr AMD guy and I think the strategy makes sense, gain marketshare gain devs on side.

As an NVIDIA customer, I don’t want to see competition fade away. While I have little patience for the noisy minority of AMD fanboys, I recognize that AMD as a company is crucial for healthy competition. Without a strong competitor in the high-end GPU market, NVIDIA may slack off, and ultimately, buyers will suffer.

Have they had high end competition at all?
It’s hard to argue that saving $50-100 is worth giving up DLSS at the high end where monitor resolutions are much higher and can take even better advantage of the technology.

What are you on about? The only card amd did not had an answer for was 4090. On all the other categories amd had cards with the same or even better raster performance and they were cheaper too. 4080 is not considered high end anymore?
Why should they answer a card that makes up less than 1% of sales?

Nvidia has actually the ¿majority? of the desktop GPU market.. since years already ?, so wth this article is saying.
So if they speak about AMD statements of the other day, still false since AMD planning to take a big part of the low low-middle ground GPU market, precissely to prevent that. Because you cannot “take control over competition” just selling 1k+ gpus, so only controlling high end GPU market.
Time will tell about this AMD “new strategy” but again; wth is this article talking about.

The DOJ already launched an antitrust investigation against them.
The fact is this industry is too important and too valuable for a single company to control the entire market. I suspect they’ll break them up into at least 3 separate entities. Won’t happen for years though.

I don’t really care about the high end; I care about a solid midrange card.
Unpopular opnion: AMD is making the right move, *if* they can improve their feature set and software / drivers, they would take control of the midrange – which matters, because the majority of GPUs sold *are midrange cards.*
If I could get an equivalent to a 4070 Ti with equal performance of upscaling/frame gen/RT, but $100 cheaper, I’d do it. AMD just has to make it happen.
( *making it happen is obviously their biggest struggle lol* )
