I would have left it like this if i didn't care enough to check if it was ok to do

this is the high power connector of the 4070 super by the way

  2. More_Physics4600

4070 super pulls 220w. So you will be fine since pcie slot provides 75w, unless you don’t think that cable can handle 145w?

  3. kazuviking

The 4070S draws 225W under load and 240W spikes without increasing the power slider. IF your PSU supports that amount on the cable then it should work.

  4. Zealousideal_Pie1018

only for 4070 4070 super will be fine and enough

  5. Original_Dimension99

It’s probably fine but it’s a lot better if you don’t do it

  6. Perhaps someone can ELI5 me this, as i can’t come up with the problem. Are we absolutely sure we’re not continuing a proud tradition of repeating things that may not be entirely correct (presumably anymore?) ?

I mean, if the dimensions are right, and the PSU can offer twice the 8-pin wattage on the cable, the apropriate safety circuits, what is it that I’m not seeing?

Seems like common sense to me. I’d be fine to do that if it was two low power components, but without even knowing the ins and outs except realising a GPU draws a lot of power I’d use two separate cables just in case.

It’s like plugging a ton of things into a mains socket, I’d be careful to not overload that either by spreading them over all the sockets as much as possible just in case.

  8. It’ll probably be fine as long as you’re PSU is a decent one, but avoid doing it if possible.

I had a 3090 FE hooked up to a pigtail for over six months… no issues.

    Changed because of asthetics.

FFS I mentally meltdown on this topic slowly!
OP, you are 100% wrong! PSU with split 12 volt rails are distinct for nearly 10 years now. This would be the only valid reason to justify your statement!
Pigtail PCIe cables are 100% legit as long as they came with your PSU. The wire gauge is high enough to carry the amperage two (2) 6+2 pin PCIe connectors pull! Otherwise the PSU-/Cable manufacturer would risk thousands of dollars of potential damage caused by the underrated cable!

I built my first computer last year and I was amazed by all the super detailed information out there on so many specific subjects except this one. Other than cable management, this was the only issue I ran into and I was only able to solve it after watching/reading at least a dozen guides on installing GPUs. Even then, the one guide that had this info only mentioned it in passing.

I understand why PSUs come with these cables now but I really don’t think a lay person or a PC novice would intuit this info. I spent two days trying to figure out why my card wasn’t being recognized because the documentation and external guides couldn’t be more clear.

If it shouldn’t be done then cables like this shouldn’t come with power supplies

  13. Lewd_NaClO

You’re fine. I ran 2 pigtail cables for my 4090 for about 4 months and then swapped to a psu that has a 12vhpwr. Been fine.

  14. you’re right. this exists but usually people prefer not to use such a connection. your choice.

  15. reddit_pengwin

Doesn’t the new 12VHPWR connector have twice the throughput of an 8-pin?

If the PSU is decent then the two 8-pins on the end of a cable should both be able to handle the wattage.

  16. Titanusgamer

I had to actually buy a new psu as i was not able to sleep properly knowing i connect gpu like this (my old PSU old had 2 power cables but gpu needed 3)

  17. theSkareqro

It’s fine until it’s not. And usually you’ll know the moment you build the computer/upgraded to a new gpu.

I’ve helped a lot of people including myself who had GPU crashes under high load during games from both red and green. The common factor is their PSU was not ATX 3.0 standard (aka old stuff) and using pigtail. Changing to 2 separate PCIE cables stopped all crashes.

If you’ve been using it with a pigtail and has no issues, carry on. If not, change it.

  18. ThrowMeOverTheHill

    would do it either way

big graphics tech dont get to dictate how i fix my shit

  19. khronik514

    Why even connect both terminals?
Only connecting one of the two from the splitter is technically the same since they are in psrallel
