Who cares? The vast majority of “retro” games people actually want to play are available through various online stores, and that way you don’t have to worry about some kid 20 years ago scratching Halo Rulez! Into the disc.

They are basically selling off the stock they could not sell as “regular” with a huge markup, thats all there is to it.

  3. I thought I read somewhere that after Reggie Fils Amie retired from Nintendo he jumped on the BoD of GameStop.

GameStop was testing their new kind of store: it was to be event based, focusing on gathering communities for special events be it competitive or non competitive. I even vaguely remember a redditor saying how neat the rest store was.

Then 2020 hit and Reggie left.

I like how many of those games are still available on digital storefronts. Obviously not the 3DS stuff, but Jak & Daxter, Crimson Skies, FF X-3 etc…

Oh boy let me pop down to Gamestop to pick up Republic Commando instead of grabbing a cheap copy on Switch or whatever.

Gamestop as a company just has this sense of playing out the string to it. Whether it’s filling the stores with Funko Pops or this halfhearted retro thing (which they’ve been doing online for awhile) they just don’t seem to know how to make the stores into places people would actually want to go to spend money.

I’m sure individual workers are giving their all, since many Gamestop employees are passionate about gaming, but the company itself has the energy of a well past his prime high school jock halfheartedly tossing a football around and remembering the glory days.

To be valuable these days game stores need a personal touch, knowledgeable employees, a fun and inviting atmosphere, and a reason for people to go there. Gamestop may just be too big to be able to offer those things.

Maybe, just maybe, other people came into the store and bought those games? Is it at all possible that there are other Gamestop locations with more stock? Idk, and you probably won’t either with that dumbass mindset

I sincerely miss the old Funcoland days with the price sheets printed out. Actual deals on stuff, fun staff. Shopping sucks now…

  7. MyUltIsMyMain

Do they buy the retro games off people to restock? Cause if that’s the case I could see why there wouldn’t be alot of stuff yet

  8. Isotheis

We need a different word for games from different eras. Or perhaps OP is, like me, disappointed by the absence of any NES/SNES/N64/Sega/PS1 games. Things from before 2000.

Well, there’s some PS2 stuff, so we’re *almost* there.

  9. DeathByPickles

Not sure I understand. Is there a whole gamestop dedicated to retro games now? Or is it a section of each store that has a retro shelf now? I like the idea though because I love finding physical copies of old favorites or games I never got a chance to play.

  10. Gamestop is just a Funko Pop store that also happens to sell games on the side.

  11. lestat01

This is the company that nuts valued at billions…

  12. PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

You gotta find an independent gaming/comic book store for the good shit

  13. SgtRicko

For the sake of being optimistic… maybe since they’re starting out they haven’t acquired a sufficient library yet and those empty store shelves are the result.

We are talking about games that are only going to become increasingly rare over time, after all; if nobody’s bothering to properly maintain those older consoles, peripherals, cartridges, disks, etc it’s all going to eventually become e-waste.

  14. tommytwothousand

Those three Xbox games in the middle are bangers though

  15. I went to my local GameStop Retro hoping for some 3DS peripherals (my stylus is a little busted, my carrying case lost all of its pleather, etc.)

    No dice. Oh well.

  16. RoyalPeace934

Gamestop: ‘Hey this is a terrible idea, lets do it anyways’

  17. lucky_rogue1975

I feel like it would be great if this was a small independent store, but as a GameStop I feel like they will just raise the prices to match their usual 2x+ markup.

  18. Shadhowes

game shops seem to be dying in this day and age since everything is becoming digital

  19. brahbocop

They don’t give a shit about how their current stores look, these are gonna be a train wreck. Everything the genius known as Ryan Cohen has done has flopped except diluting shareholders.

  20. AnonymousAggregator

    What’s wrong with crimson skies???

  21. Great. So now GameStop can further inflate the prices of retro gamers and collectors moreso than they already are.

  22. Brocily2002

Bro they have republic commando right in the middle of the shelf with everything pointing right at it! What else did you want!!!!!!!

  23. MineMetal

At least your location actually put something out. My location, despite coming up in their retro store search, said they’re not participating.

  24. DarthWoo

One of my local GameStop stores is listed as a retro store, but I saw absolutely nothing in that regard when I last visited. Instead, they seem to have fluffed out at least twelve feet of wall space for just Pokémon TCG sets. (Those big ones that each take up a lot of space.)

  25. Coffeedemon

I guess this is where all the old games they screwed people over in their buy-back plan go now? They never have anything in the bins older than PS4 but no doubt have a warehouse full of copies of Fable and whatnot.

  26. kontrarianin

Hey buddy , just so you know, they don’t print them anymore so a lot of games are hard to get ya know?

  27. HollowDanO

I have a ton of PS2 and PS3 games. I could probably get $6.34 for all of them. In store credit.

  28. VeterinaryMartin

I never buy from GameStop. I want them to go bankrupt. I buy all my new games from Amazon mint condition.

  29. WWE day reckoning for the GameCube is a hidden gem of a wrestling game.

  30. PreferenceGloomy9947

Gamestop is such BS I had to actually yell at them for keep trying to automatically add the membership and warranty to the bill without asking and them constantly trying to ask me to get it. I told them soon as I walked up to the counter “I don’t want the pro membership or warranty at all” and they would not take no for an answer till I had to scream at them

  31. Huh? Crimson Skies and Republic Commando are classics!

  32. crazy-carebear

I knew a retro shop in my area that when they opened up, they had to use their own personal collections as seed so that the store had stuff to sell. They did also tell me that most of their decent, good condition, rare games went straight to their website and not on the shelves though.
