I just got 3 office computers for free, any ideas on projects I should try with them?

8th gen i7s – Install Win11 on em and sell.

Turn one into a NAS. Use that NAS to create local backups of your computers.

Turn a second one into a Minecraft server.

Turn the third one into another Minecraft server because I’m out of ideas already.

First, I would take a screwdriver and screw….

Build sleepers these are good for that.

I’d play around with creating a Proxmox cluster with Ceph storage. I’ve not done this myself which is why I’d want to play with it.

If you were to install a 10Gbit NIC in each (dual SFP+ cards and DAC cables aren’t too expensive) you can link them to each other in a mesh setup. Use the onboard NIC for management.

Would turn one into a retro/emulation gaming build, another into a server aaand I’m out of ideas

U have up to 3 servers u can use. Maybe one as a NAS, another for plex, steam cache or some other stuff (i heard u could even make a computer into your home router/switch system with the right hardware and software). You could even build a low end gaming machine by just slotting a GPU into one. Or better yet, if they’re not too proprietary in their parts, transplant the parts into another case and get a better power supply so u can have stronger GPUs in there.

sell em to people that need them. or part them out.

8th gen i7 are still decent and worth some money.

One a NAS, One a retro gaming machine, and the third a Jellyfin media server.

You can turn them into gaming PC’s and sell them.🤔😂

  12. mell0wwaters

sell them to afford computer parts for your own computer

  13. Dragon_Small_Z

put a 6400 in them and use them as a retro game console

  14. ShakaDBL

I’d use one to create the ultimate gaming rig, strip it completely, get my hands on the most powerful small form hardware and create a monster…
Then i’d meditate about my life decisions

Give one to me first, then to the media servers.

  16. Media server (I like Emby), Retro video game emulation. (Possibly make an Arcade machine), and maybe some sort of DVR for a security system.

8th Gen i7 is quite nice. Run OPNSense on one box for an overkill router, firewall, DHCP server, AdGuard Home combo. Just have to add a cheap Intel NIC to it. Run WireGuard for road warrior VPN while you’re at it for the services from the other two PCs.

One can run Proxmox for Plex, Minecraft, TF2, etc. behind the firewall.

TrueNAS for the third box, add a cheap LSI HBA and DAS to put hard drives in. Plex media can live on the TrueNAS box, along with all of your other data as an onsite backup.

If one has a free PCIE port you can leverage, get a 2.5gbe NIC with two ports and a 2.5gbe unmanaged switch and build your own router with pfsense.

    NAS with the other one.

    Game server with the third.

I refreshed some laptops and gave them to my family as computers to use in there living room.

  20. RogueShroom

I’d hook one up to my living room TV to easier stream sporting event I don’t have access to

  21. THRobinson75

How about, Project Free Giveaway, and give me one 😅

  22. pythonwiz

Throw a low profile 4060 in one of them and you’ve got a decent little gaming system.

EDIT: I looked it up an it only supports low profile, single slot GPUs. So that limits your reasonable options to only the RX 6400…

  23. Unusual-East4126

I use one as a home immich/plex server.

  24. Affectionate-Memory4

Cluster those bois. Time to learn networking.

  25. Lewinator56

I7 8700s so not bad systems, I’m going to assume 16GB RAM too. Decent as servers, keep one, flog the other 2?

  26. soulless_ape

Server cluster for virtualization and containers with Proxmox
