A Valve game made by IceFrog? Yeah, there’s no way that wasn’t gonna happen.

the marketing is us freaking out about the game, valve knows exactly what they’re doing

Poor Concord

Don’t know about zero marketing. They gave random some people access to the game without officialy announcing the game, which made people feel like being in an exclusive club who can play it. But as far as I know, anyone that has access can invite several people to play the game. There is always some kind of “prestige” being in a “closed” group of people who can play this game and people start posting about it on the internet like reddit.
It may not be expensive marketing, but still marketing.
Gornub
It doesn’t have traditional marketing in the way one would expect, but Valve basically got every player to market the game for them based on Valve’s name recognition while making it seem interesting to start because you have to be invited.
It also helps that it’s just a fun little video game to play.

Between Deadlock, Suicide Squad, and Concord it’s time for game developers to take a sober look at what they’re working on and how they’re working on it.

new game from the biggest pc game distributor who also is known to make good games when they release a new game:

Closed alpha that has over 100k people playing? I hope I’m not supposed to think it was some exclusive thing.

Just waiting on my invite! Any day now!

How the fuck?
I’m so surprised at the player numbers, not only because it’s in alpha, but because it’s yet another MOBA/Hero Shooter. It’s a pretty saturated and stale genre, and none of their characters are all that interesting to me.
Digitalon
Word of mouth is a hell of a thing. It’s not every day that Valve actually makes a new game!
Fyrefawx
It’s such a fun game. I hope they release other maps. I normally hate MOBAs but this one is like a mesh with a hero shooter so it feels so much better.
Azrael-XIII
It’s Valve, everyone on Steam is gonna know about the game, it doesn’t need marketing
azdak
This is cool but it’s dumb to use it as any kind of case study on why marketing isn’t necessary. The only salient takeaway is: of course valve doesn’t need to market
Halvardr_Stigandr
Solely on the weight of who is creating it because the design is dreadfully dull.
ziftos
lets not kid ourselves the marketing is a invite appearing in your steam inbox that says try out our game for free from a universally beloved developer whose game platform you are already using
RockLeeSmile
What if… THIS is marketing? Woah!
puzzleheadbutbig
People keep saying that “word of mouth” or “exclusiveness”. This has nothing to do with it. Make a game and try the same “marketing”, you won’t get 1000 players even. People want to play this because it’s made by Valve. And because it’s good. And because it’s free.
If Valve would drop this game out of nowhere next Friday, it would hit 300k+ players peak instantly. And it would retain perhaps half of it because it’s a good game.
