Me when I hear Avowed isn’t just gonna be Skyrim with Fallout NV’s writing

the hell is avowed, and what does skyrim and fallout mid vegas have to do with it?

  2. underprivlidged

Outer Worlds – Obsidian’s attempt at FNV for the new age.

Avowed – Obsidian’s attempt at making Outer Worlds in a fantasy setting.

This isn’t Fallout and TES anymore. And that’s not entirely a bad thing. Let Bethesda keep their IPs and Obsidian use an engine that isn’t older than most people on this site.

  3. AdmiralAkbar1

Probably because most of the creatives who worked on FNV are no longer part of Obsidian.

  4. festerninja

I really liked the Outer Worlds. It’s a lot closer to what I hoped Starfield would be.

  5. vendettaclause

I dont even understand why people consider the “writing” in new vagas so good in the first place…

  6. QuestPlease

Please no, I don’t want more of the Creation Engine.

  7. Anubra_Khan

This game has looked worse and worse each time they release new footage since the original teaser. It’s kind of bizarre.

  8. Cloud_N0ne

I just pray it’s better than The Outer Worlds.

TOW was truly awful, a genuinely bad game. It got a lot of hype at the height of the anti-Bethesda hate, but I’m happy to see more and more people souring on it, realizing how bad it is. Yeah, Fallout 76 was terrible at launch and Starfield is a heavily flawed game, but gimme launch 76 over The Outer Worlds any day. Hell, gimme Anthem over Outer Worlds. It was that bad.

Avowed will have Pillars of Eternity writing as it’s the same universe, which I think is better tbh, PoE 1 & 2 are incredible games

  10. Constantine2423

The answer is money. They don’t have the budget Bethesda has. They mentioned numerous times that Outer Worlds was retrained/limited in scope due to the budget.

Outer Worlds 2 is coming and presumably (along with Avowed) they have more money to work with now (still less than Bethesda obv), so we’ll see if it’s noticed.

Early impressions of Avowed seem pretty positive but that’s not saying much.

Never finished New Vegas, the jank and game breaking bugs were too much to handle, never finished Outer Worlds, it was too boring and I completely lost interest in the story halfway through. Say what you want about Bethesda, but at least I’ve finished all their main sequence games.

  12. Relo_bate

They said they were making Avowed a proper Skyrim like open world but pivoted to be a more outer worlds style experience because it’s “playing to their strengths”

  13. stalememeskehan

Obsidian isn’t even as good as they used to be, they have completely different writers now.

  14. Just_a_terrarian163

I was kinda disappointed that it got delayed until I learned it’s coming out exactly on my birthday (18th in us likely 19th in my timezone so it still counts). I am actually really excited for it. (and I don’t gotta preorder and maybe be disappointed cuz gamepass day one)

  15. johnroastbeef

Not going to lie, when I heard the game time to complete the main story was so short I was pretty disappointed. Like ok I get it you don’t want to compare your game to Elder Scrolls, but how about any other fucking RPG. Like, they are supposed to be kind of long. I don’t get this strategy of theirs, that was my biggest gripe with outer worlds. Cool game but about as deep as a puddle.

  16. marveljew

I’m bit a confused. Are you saying you want *Avowed* to be “Skyrim with Fallout NV’s writing”?

  17. StrengthToBreak

The people who made FNV are long gone…

  18. fredgiblet

Obsidian doesn’t have the same crew they had then. It’s been a decade and a half.

  19. deathbunnyy

Everything Xbox touches dies. Entirely different game now with the copy pasted fortnite graphics and gameplay. It’s so infuriating, it was supposed to be a call back to new Vegas… What in the fuck man.

  20. PogTuber

Honestly I think the combat looks like a good thing and if this turns into a tighter high quality RPG experience with 20-30 hours of gameplay I’m all in, because damn I’m tired of 100+ hour epic slogfests.

  21. Real-Human-1985

Obsidian is cooked, they couldn’t build agame equal to Skyrim nor do they have the talent anymore to write great narratives. Avowed and Outer Worlds have terrible dialogue. Their games are also smaller in scope than any Bethesda game. Avowed only has humans and humans with sharp ears because they can’t make different playable races. It’s not open world nor does it have a large game world. They have only shown small dungeon arenas because the game likely takes place in numerous such arenas and a small quest hub outside of them. Even FONV was 80% Fallout 3 with some tinkering done by Obsidian lmao. It’s no wonder they’ve never come close to that game in scale or anything else since.

  22. beaglemaster

    Skyrim wasn’t even good.

The combat sucks (why everyone always ends up as stealth archer).

The characters suck (who actually remembers anyone about this game besides Serana?).

The story sucks (all of the plot is full of plot holes that serve nothing but making sure the player is a messiah of any given moment).

The quests suck (literally all of them are just brain dead kill and fetch quests).

The only good thing about it is that its a simple sandbox environment to get lost in for a few hours.

  23. thatHecklerOverThere

All this conversation about the writing is ignoring the studio we’re talking about. Obsidian _always_ has that quality of writing. Setting, genre, whatever – if it’s an rpg-_anything_ it’ll have that crunch. Avowed will be more than fine on that count.

The issue is scale. They don’t do that. That’s why Avowed is going to be more like outer worlds (perhaps a bit bigger, but not _Bethesda_ big) in scope. But even that’s fine, because as many folks can attest (hell, as even Bethesda can attest), if you can’t fill your rpg world with content of uniform quality due to size, it’s probably best to keep it tight.

  24. LauraTFem

Skyrim already exists, I don’t want another Skyrim. Maybe we should start making new games, as a treat.

  25. General-Rain6316

For real, the best possible marketing they could have had for this game is literally “Skyrim but made by obsidian”. If bethesda won’t make a new elder scrolls why not do it for them

  26. Soulfulkira

It’s not like Skyrim is special. It’s 12+ years old. They can make a new game if they want

  27. PIXYTRICKS

Am I the only one that feels Fallout NV is overrated?

  28. SiriusBaaz

All I would want is for obsidian to get the backing and funding they need. Fallout NV proved that they can make something amazing if they have to back up to do it. And Outer Wilds proved that they’re more than capable to make something half decent even if they don’t.

  29. Lairy_Hegs

I just hope it’s more robust in choices than Outer Worlds was. That game had some interesting options but once you really pushed you’d find it didn’t really account for that many styles of playthrough.

Honestly? My expectations aren’t *that* high. Considering TOW2 is at least being planned/developed at some level, I fear they’ll only make minor growths with Avowed (1). Then the pressure is only on so much to make TOW2 better than this. If they make this amazing, they’d have to do at least as good, if not much better, on TOW2. Idk. Its definitely a cynical point of view, but from what I’ve heard the melee combat is shitty, and while there seem to be a good amount of dialogue options, the separate biomes mechanic has me worried it’ll just be another situation like the planets in TOW: once you finish the starting quests and immediately available side quests, there’s no reason to go back.

If nothing I do *really* ends up mattering by the end, and only choices made in the last zone matter, I’ll be disappointed. I’ll give it at least one playthrough, but that’ll probably be it.

  30. alkonium

Because Bethesda would never let them use TES’ setting.

  31. No-Gear-8017

the obsidian that made NV is not the obsidan of now. the game has no clear vision or goal it will be a train wreck.

  32. Renan_PS

Yes, I hate new games, please give me something I have already played 15 times!

New IPs suck, I just want the games I have already played to release again with a different number in front, or maybe “remaster” or “remake” or “definitine edition”.

You know what? Maybe keep the same title because a new title is too much new stuff for me, I just want the same things I’ve played already again.

Keep the same title and release it on a different console or something with some exclusive content.

I don’t know why companies keep making new games when all we want is to play the same ones again!

  33. IceFire2050

I will never understand why people expect gold out of Obsidian when they announce a game.

Obsidian has 2 different faces. The “game” developer and the game developer.

When Obsidian makes a “game”, they’re making a sequel to someone else’s game, they do good work. They know how to listen to community feedback and fix issues with the game. They can take the setting and story elements and put their own twist on them and give a very enjoyable experience.

But when Obsidian makes their own original games, they fall flat.

Fallout New Vegas was amazing, but mechanically it was a Fallout 3 mod. They fixed bugs the community reported to them. They re-used existing assets (and yes created some original ones) and used existing tools to create the game. Bethesda did the hard part. Obsidian polished it and everyone praises them for it.

They did the same thing with KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights with Bioware. Created sequels using the same engine that they fixed a few bugs with. Then people compare their game to the previous one and call them a better dev that the original.

They have done some good games, but their wholey original titles are never really mentioned outside of niche audiences. Alpha Protocol was really fun. Both the Pillars of Eternity titles. But when’s the last time you heard someone talking about those?

South Park The Stick of Truth was great but South Park Digital Studios held their hand through the whole development process and did the writing for them.

The Outer Worlds was a pretty mid experience overall. People acting like it was going to show Bethesda how Fallout is suppose to be done but it was just a pretty dull experience overall.

Grounded was fun but it was less a AAA title and gave more of a feel of an indie title.

  34. RandoDude124

You really want this game to fail…

    #Don’t ya?

I’m gonna play it and ***I’m personally excited for it.***

  35. CursedSnowman5000

Because with quantity/large scale comes the diluting of quality AKA the writing and deeply fleshed out mechanics.

You just can’t have both. As a dev once said “game development is 10 good ideas in a 5 pound bag”
