I’m on 10 right now with TPM turned off in the BIOS to avoid any surprises. I’m on the fence about whether I’ll upgrade or build a new machine.Ā But if I’m still in the current rig in October 2025, I’ll upgrade. It’s Windows. It will, just like every other Windows upgrade, be a little better, a little worse, and mostly the same, depending what you’re doing.
I’m considering putting Linux on my laptop. It’s from 2016 and still fine as a web browser that plays some old games. It doesn’t meet the hardware requirements for 11, but it doesn’t feel like a piece of junk, either.Ā I’ll give Ubuntu a shot and if it turns out to be more trouble than it’s worth, I’ll replace the machine. It costs me nothing to try.

Operating systems setup programs to run and then gets the fuck out of the way unless the program explicitly calls back into the operating system, or it’s time to give another program a turn to run, or some hardware event happens. I don’t know how it would be involved in CPU branch prediction.
What did Microsoft do to fuck this up so badly? There’s some ideas floating around on the internet, like maybe some vulnerability mitigation got in the way and/or they disabled or failed to enable some hardware feature when setting the program up, possibly for security reasons (the fact that AMD commented that running in “Admin mode” affects this seems to imply this). But there’s no clear answers for this. We don’t know if it affects Linux, for instance. If we knew, maybe someone can even backport a workaround or fix for Windows 10. Hell, maybe it doesn’t even affect Windows 10.
I don’t even know which sub I can go to have a non-meme-y discussion on this.

ROFLMAO, no. MSFT has made it their job to make Windows 11 extremely intrusive, bloated and trying to force people to use their inferior apps that are not Windows. There are several Linux destro’s that now require far less learning, is far more compatible and runs games without shit MSFT code hampering them that require “magical patches” to improve the OSs shit performance.
No ads. No jumping through hopes constantly to turn MSFTs trash apps off after they turn them on. No needing to add a list of 100s of MSFT servers to the hosts files to prevent MSFT from being to do their bullshit like continually turning OneDrive on..or anything else for that matter, or force advertisements. No backdoors, no spying or gathering personal information.
Windows 11 would be great if MSFT wasnt MSFT. BTW, if I was not clear enough. Fuck Microsoft and I am glad they pulled out of the mobile market and there is at least one thing safe from their terrible business practices and shit coding.

The fact that I can’t have a local account and disable a bunch of the online features of 11 is a big turn away for me.

I will stay on Win 10 Pro until there is no longer any support and even then I’ll still decide at the time. I have everything how I like it and have zero desire to change at this stage. Besides, I have a 13700k, a 4090 and 64 GB RAM, performance isn’t an issue for me right now.
