Modern games weren’t doing it for me, and I have fond memories of the 200s stealth games (specifically the Tenchu and Splinter Cell games) so I decided to fire up Tenchu 2 and was pleasantly surprised at how much fun it still played. I had completely forgotten that you can swim (and hide under water using a bamboo straw to breathe). The visuals are obviously very dated, yet the core mechanics are still satisfying.

Nice choice! Stealth gameplay can be so satisfying.

I need to add the first two games back to my collection. I remember getting the first one with my PS1. And I remember being mesmerized by the fact you could get on top of buildings. Never got too far in it though. I remember it being a tough game.

I think that Metal Gear 5 has some of the best open ended stealth in any game I have ever played. You just need to get past the intro level.

There are some major issues with the story as a long time fan of the series but if you are looking for just the gameplay aspect of it, I highly recommend it.

I love the Tenchu games and I wish they’d bring them back in some way. They were really cool.

I loved Tenchu back in the day. Some of the PS2 titles like Wrath of Heaven were really underrated. You might like Sekiro if you’re looking for a more modern title–it has stealth-centric exploration with punishing boss battles, so I definitely felt the similarities while playing it.

There is chatter M$ gonna make another 1.

I saw that Nakey Jakey video! Gotta give props to proper stealth mechanics!

Was it Tenchu where you could murder someone infront of their comrades, hide and they’d shout “just an animal?”

Oh my god I loved these games back in the day, this series needs to have a come back.

Often forgotten as it came out so late in the PS1 lifecycle, in fact I think the PS2 was out already. I quite enjoyed the more in-depth story and a few QoL improvements, but man was Rikimaru’s last level a marathon.

  16. DiamondDustVIII

Man if there was ever a game series that needed to be revived, Tenchu is right near the top of that list. My buddies and I used to have so much fun with the first one back in the day.

  17. evewight

    TIL there is a sequel.

    Tenchu is Sekiro’s origin

I actually got stuck on this game after repeatedly dying to some boss in an insanely long cave level. Never did beat it.

Didnt have this Game also this cool custom Level creator?

  20. johnsonfromsconsin

Microsoft should definitely reboot this franchise.

  21. yuser-naim

I used to love the mission creator in this. I have this and the first one on my phone for some stealth action on the go.

  22. Man_in_the_coil

The create your own levels was a thing of beauty.

  23. MenstrualMilkshakes

When you do a stealth kill takedown and get the rare decapitation animation. Soooo good.

  25. Weissekaiser

I was only able to play this 2 hours a day in a playstation rental, without memory card. So everyday afterschool I always repeating rikimaru mission from training to stage 5 lol

There was a great spiritual successor for the PS2, “Shinobido: Way of the Ninja”.

  27. 2Dement3D

I was so excited when Sekiro was said to be inspired by Tenchu, but for as good as it was, it really didn’t scratch the same itch. A new Tenchu game is definitely one of my most wanted sequels.

  28. PorkPyeWalker

Loved that you could get Grand Master rating without killing (guards) so long as you didn’t get seen. Great idea, so tricky but satisfying when you managed it.

  29. ThunderBlunt777

I only got to play Tenchu Z, but that was the most fun I ever had on Xbox 360. I’d kill to play it again.

  30. SwordAndBoardFighter

This is such a great game.

I read somewhere that Aragami 2 is a good spiritual successor to Tenchu. Can anyone who played both games confirm it?

  31. Wayward85

Omg absolute core memory. That era had such amazing stealth games, but these were standouts.
