I read somewhere that WD-40 will help speed up the defragment process. You’ll have to apply it evenly on the platters though. One way to accomplish that is to put a few drops of WD-40 in the center while the disk is spinning. Centripetal force takes over and helps spread the lubricant evenly. Putting too much will create a mess in your working environment, just like thermal pastes.

Defrag has nothing do to with your pc performance especially if it’s a separate disk. SSD’s shouldn’t even be defragged, dunno if this is one. The only scenario where it can affect is if it’s the main boot drive.

I remember when my hard drive started dying, my pc got slower, but what I didn’t expect is it wasn’t even the primary drive, windows itself was on an SSD. I’m not sure if it’s just windows and if Linux would do it better though or if it’s just normal, it’s only happened once to me.

Windows defrag will only defrag files under 64mb in size. Perfectly normal for other programs to show more fragmentation than windows. To be honest though, the built-in defrag in windows should be more than adequate. Make sure it’s set to automatically defrag. Assuming this is a mechanical hdd. Only use the trim function for ssd’s. Do NOT defrag your ssd using a third party utility.

It would be useful to say if it’s a HDD or SSD, because SSDs are okay when being fragmented, actually they fragment themselves even when you do absolutely nothing, but SSDs are fine and won’t have a speed penalty, actually it’s really bad defragging an SSD.
HDDs need to be deframented to increase its read speeds.
