Honestly the vast majority of current PC gamers shouldn’t buy any of those CPUs.
For anyone on Ryzen 1000, 2000, and 3000, you can with most boards do a bios update for Ryzen 5000. If you’re coming from 1000 or 2000, a Ryzen 5600 is a massive upgrade for gaming and $75 on AliExpress. If you’ve got 1000, 2000, or 3000, probably step it up to a 5700x3d for like $145 on AliExpress. If you already have a 5600/5700x/5800x/etc the X3d chips probably aren’t worth it, unless you love multiplayer E-sports games that are really CPU heavy.
Now on the Intel side, even an i7 8700k from way back in 2017 gives you slightly better than a Ryzen 3600 in performance and a bit worse than a Ryzen 5600. That’s not bad. The 11400f, 8700k, 9700k, 9900k, 10600k, 10700k are all about the same performance, give the 8 core/16 thread CPUs a slight edge in some games. The 10850k, 10900k benefit from some cache advantages. The 11600k, 11700k, 11900k have some better IPC with good clocks, again slight edge to the 8 core CPUs (11700k/11900k). You’d need the lower end models like the 8400, 8600k 10400, 10100, 8100, 9400, 9600k, etc to consider upgrading and even the you might find something in socket. Heck, even on Intel enthusiast boards, if you need Pci-e lanes it’s hard to upgrade. Even the ancient X99 platform has overclockable CPUs (the 8 core 1660v3 being cheap) that can get to 4.3+ GHz paired with quad channel ram and get you close to Ryzen 3000 in gaming. X299 does a bit better than that, though 7000 to 10000 series on that all wind up pretty close.
So, idk the current stuff isn’t really worth it for the vast majority of people. Really generalizing here, but pretty much anything from 2017 on can have a relatively cheap CPU upgrade within platform and handle up to a Rtx 3070/6700xt without significant bottlenecking unless you literally just play E-sports games like Counter-strike all day that are heavily CPU based.
Heck, if you’re on AM4 or LGA 1200, I mean crap I’d be fine with a 10850k/11700k/10900k/11900k/5700x3d/5800x3d with a 4080 super or even a 4090. I’d assume you’re running 4k at that point and it won’t be that bad lol.

To be honest these reviews kinda made me think maybe it’s better I stay with my 13th gen, lol. x3d isn’t really a great choice for me. I want good productivity, many cores and good for gaming. Which is Intel, when it doesn’t cook. Mine had no issues for 2 years, think I’m safe.

Oh it’s liquid cooled too so the picture is accurate. 😀
