I think this is a great thing. Right now I would still get the steam deck over the allyx or legion, but the next true iteration of the ally or legion that will not be the case if they add a touchpad and oled, especially if I can install steam OS instead of using windows which is awful on a handheld.

This sounds like just approved partners (in this case ROG Ally) but if it does become a distro that anyone can download, I’ll definitely give it a spin
But I do feel it’ll lose some of its advantages and overall be a big pain for Valve if they have to make it work properly on the sheer number of possible PC configs out there so that might be unlikely

Didn’t steam os come out with steam machines?

Neat. Though I think I’ll stick with W11 on my Legion Go. It just works.

I hope they make it desktop compatible. Looking at a Strix Halo Mini-PC console replacer in the future.

If they can get a cut (like windows license on computers) it would be awesome for them, because they can get more money to improve an already good operating system for pc games

Why would steam allow this? What do they have to gain by giving one of the best things about the deck to competitors??

Bringus Studios has entered the chat lol.
Dude puts out fantastic vids of him adding steamdeck os to nearly every device he gets his hands on. Hes super funny and isnt afraid to show many of the difficulties he deals with while also explaining the steps in a way people who arent quite so tech savvy (much like myself) can understand. Watching his vids garnered a lot of knowledge for me and i was able to tackle some new build changes for my own desktop with a fair amount of confidence. I would hiiiiighly recommend his videos.
