Real. Half life (a pretty great game imo) is less than a gig. Meanwhile modern games are 80+ gigs and don’t look fun at all. All they focus on these days is greater and greater graphics

Unfortunately, games can be unoptimized because people will still buy them and play them.
AussieJeffProbst
The biggest issue comes down to 4k textures. You can only compress them so much.

I remember watching a video about the original elite on the BBC micro and how they had to innovate to get that working in 32kb.
The biggest reason for unoptimized games are people who pay for 4090s and shit on games when every single object in the environment isn’t at the highest LOD at all times, interacts with the player with 100% realism, and gives them head. I’ve witnessed so many 4090 owners going “I want games that stress my system so that I can justify spending part of my mortgage on a PC part”
For clarification; people buying high end PC parts are the ones most likely buying the $100-$160 editions of these games. It’s how Ubisoft and other companies like them justify outrageous pricing and terrible performance. Todd Howard for example stating “you might just need to upgrade your PC’s” for Starfield

OP isn’t entirely wrong. While there are technical limitations to smaller/efficient games/updates like uncompressed 4K textures/images, there’s also a lot of other factors. The game industry is known to be very harsh on its developers and set ridiculous expectations and deadlines. Hard to create something beautiful under those tough conditions.

bro that 40kb game looks like trash.
that 500gb game has realistic graphics.
awake283
I wonder how big they are before compression software like Oodle.
Vapehead34
Is this 500Gb for the new COD? I’m more dumbfounded that there’s a part 6 than the game size lol series getting bad as madden.

Cyberpunk 2077 Complete Edition 100GB.
Probably most detailed large open world game without loading screens with path tracing. 9 fully dubbed languages.

It’s mostly the hi def models and textures
and graphics, audio that takes up the space
ostrieto17
Yep, I don’t need the audio of 16 other languages, dialogue audio and voices adds up a ton of unnecessary storage bloat, same with texture resolution it should be modular.
a texture for an object I see only once or almost never shouldn’t be 4k with parallax and 3m polygons.
bubbybishh
Bull fucking shit. They just want more real estate on your hard drive. Simple as that. The game has no excuse. Pure greed.

mfw a game takes up more storage than my laptop has onboard
SnooSketches3386
Cheapskate Activision unwilling to pay for optimization and manual compression? Go figure

Remember when GTA V was considered a big game?

I genuinely think they do this because they know that the size of the game is more of a problem for *other* games than theirs. The intention is to quite literally push other games off people’s systems, relying on the considerable sunk cost of a half a TB download to protect their game from being uninstalled.

Recently, for performance reasons. I rewrote a .net app in pure C99. The original app was 200mb, my C program was 450k (including all the libraries and dlls)
Because everyone only uses their computers for gaming, right? Right?!
hiimhuman1
False. It’s 4 game pack. Deselect DMZ, MW3 and MW2022 at the installation and it won’t exceed 250GB. Even 2 TB SSD’s are not expensive anymore.

Worth remembering by the way, you still had massive frame rate drops, crashes and bugs in the 1980s. Difference was that running a game on a home computer was still magical back then and people didn’t really mind.
ohthedarside
It should be law that 4k textures are optional downloads
Swipsi
Ahhh yeah. Nothing changed in games since 1984.
keskese_saum86
The problem – people still buying this shit. And it will keep worse and worse.
Trash2030s
yet another braindead meme that doesnt understand how much space textures take up and that COD HQ with ALL of its games together doesnt break 300gb, much less a singular game..
Slight-Coat17
It’s intentional to force you to commit to playing it. No way in hell the game actually requires that much space, it’s bloat.
ExortTrionisRektus
This is only going to get worse with the ads everywhere, dlc’s and excessive need for big storage

Im not a Developer so correct me if im wrong but isnt the issue of modern games due to them not properly compressing files?
TheBoobSpecialist
It’s not the textures doing that, it’s the damn “microtransactions”.

Animal Well, released earlier this year, [is only 34 megabytes](https://www.gamesradar.com/games/platformer/in-an-era-of-100gb-games-breakout-metroidvania-hit-animal-well-is-only-34mb-so-small-that-its-4k-ps5-background-is-likely-larger-than-the-game/).
Is that even a serious post?
