Just open it, you get a nice mirror, couple cool magnets and a pretty good motor for an Arduino projects
I hate that people do this. Perfectly good hardware going into a landfill. These items can be reused and recycled.

I always just took them apart with a screwdriver, destroyed the PCB, removed the platters and scratched them up.

I take my old drives to the gun range and use em as target practice.
Fun fact, we actually had a HDD stop a 9mm because it hit right on the spindle and launched the drive about 20feet away. Found the round pancaked on the spindle in the middle but did not penetrate.
