
This is an older video now, but this video from der8auer shows a noticable improvement in temps from sanding an IHS with 180 grit sandpaper, with improvements from further sanding/polishing being marginal/within error from his testing method. Most people who I see sanding or lapping wouldn't even start with anything less than 400 grit – My question is, why do the factory IHS receive such a boost from such a coarse grit?
If the difference is down to flatness, how horrible are the tolerances during manufacturing, and why do Intel/AMD not invest the tiny amount to improve this? Or is the difference in this test moreso down to reducing the thickness of the IHS?
I can understand that this probably doesn't matter for most CPU's with a much lower power draw, but I can't believe these companies are unable to create a metal surface that can be improved by a $2 steel file from a hardware store. What am I missing?

Because it’s a lot cheaper to get them close enough than it is to get them nearly perfect. That’s said the argument makes a bit less sense for something that’s the absolute top of the line and will only be sold in limited quantities.
