    20 watts is nothing? Like idk. I was expecting like 180 watts for all this efficiency talk. AMD should’ve just skipped a year.

    This might be a dumb question by what is the practical need for such substantial power efficiency over actual performance gains? Like, is the difference enough to see on your power bill, or does it really make a temperature difference in your room? And are gaming consumers really pushing for more power efficiency over more FPS? I don’t understand why AMD would release new generation of CPUs with a literal 3% performance boost and still be celebrated for the “power efficiency.”

    I’ve had all sorts of CPU’s, including currently a power hog 14900k, and I could truly not care less about how power efficient it is as long as I see performance gains. I have to be missing something.

    12600k is insane, still a beast, very close to 5800x3d and 12700k. So glad I bought it last year for such a good price. The performance it gives at such a small cost I’ve payed is truly insane.

    They are two sides of the same coin. Achieving a given performance level with less power means achieving more performance with the same power.

  13. AMD’s gone really aggressive on the power limits here.

    This smells of “pre-planned product refresh”. Give it a year and there’ll be AMD’s 11-series (or maybe “XTs”, same silicon, relaxed power limits, substantial uplifts.

    The good news is that these are PBO unlocked, and *you can raise those limits.* From what little PBO testing we’ve seen, it’s a large all-core/many-core 9700X uplift vs 7700X at the expense of some of its efficiency.

    GN’s 9700X ran at 4450 MHz or so in Blender – lower than my 5600X does – so relaxing the power limit there would get it beyond 5 GHz, and Blender only cares about n-cores x clock.

    What’s more concerning is that so many outlets – GN included – are saying it took screwing around to make their CPUs work, where they worked at all. Steve game AMD a much more favourable review than I would have, given his CPU didn’t work with his test platform, he had to change RAM, and the other CPU he was sent *did not work at all*.

    This echoes the launch of the 5000 series and 7000 series. They stabilised over time, but early adopters got burned.

    good? The power consumption of modern gaming pc’s has been becoming crazy and problematic (/cough intel 13/14th)?

    I am not remotely mad at AMD for focusing on improving power efficiency, I hope this carries over to server processors as well, as the energy usage for data centers is very very high…

    personally this is what I have been calling for, a pull back from just shoving power into these cpu’s until they are on the verge of destroying themselves and instead work on improving efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

    It is also likely that this is laying the ground work for faster / more powerful next gen parts that will also benefit from these efficiency improvements.

    Show the PBO chart as well. There is no efficiency but just a factory under-volt’ed CPU.

    FPS = 7850x 3D -> 181/128 vs the 9700x 155/110

    Like what?

    Plus looking it up looks like the 7850x 3d might be like $20 more?

    imo, absolutely no. I’d stick with previous gen. Even in math numbers: how long would it take you to make up for the additional costs in terms of energy savings?

    If anything I’d look at 13600K when and if Intel solves it (I know, it is a strech)

    i was thinking about building a small server in my closet that i would use for game server/ VM server/ jellyfin / docker etc. I have 1x 120 mm hole leading to outside from that room so i am limited by whatever i can cool with 120 mm fan. The 9700 is EXACTLY what i was waiting for! So great! 😀

  24. Sad times. Was always too poor to get stuff and now i have allot of cash but nothing worth buying… every release is so sad. Hope the x3d will magically have more performance, than previous gen.

  25. I wonder if AMD will release a 95 or 125 watt Ryzen 9800; with its efficiency gains it should be a nice stepping stone between the 9700 and 9800X3D,

    I custom OCed my 7 7700x and it’s rough, 120W draw with spikes of 160ish occasionally monitored. Full multicore use with a stable -12 on Curve optimizer pushes me close to thermal limits 93c out of 95c. If they weren’t more power efficient it’d be constant thermal issues under load.

    This isnt really that great. Debauer unlocked the power limits and the 9700x is still slower at the same wattage as my 13700k (which is stable and cool under-volted).

    I was expecting WAY more than this since I was planning on ditching Intel if my CPU starts to give issues.
