The more I analyse, do research, the more confused I get.
My need is simple: I need a GPU which can support the current games I play best and maybe future. I have no upgrade plans as of now.
Games that I want this GPU to support:
1. CS2
2. GTA V
3. RDR 2
4. COD MW
5. GTA 6 hopefully
I know either of the GPUs will support the current games, but is either better for GTA 6? I have a 1440p monitor and intend to play the mentioned games on highest settings if possible.
Please help me decide, I get mixed answers everywhere.

with the last 2 software updates and some tuning the 7900gre performance is close to the 7900xt, and it has 16GB of vRAM, 12 is already not enough in a few games at max graphic settings

I’ve been pretty happy with my 7800xt. I run RDR2 full ultra @ 1440 with shader mods and a few other mods, game works absolutely perfect and looks great too. D2 runs super well along with overwatch, Ready or Not, Insurgency, GTA/FiveM

The more VRAM will keep the 7900 viable for longer, both have good performance. Nvidia is way ahead on ray-tracing but that’s the only thing they have going for them

7900 GRE slightly over 4070 Super at 1440p
7900 if you only care about pure gaming, 4070 if you care about ray tracing or streaming
7900GRE has better raw performance, and 4GB more of VRAM. 4070 Super has more features. If you don’t care about ray tracing, DLSS, or NVENC encoding, then go for the 7900GRE.
Definitely get the 7900gre. I got it last week, with the updates and a little simple yt-tutorial overlocking I steadily get 15-20% more fps than the 7800xt, which will definitely be a little bit more than you’d get with the 4070. Unless you know, raytracing.

Unless GTA6 has built-in RT (Rockstar’s lighting engine is already very good, but GTAV on consoles has some RT) then the GRE is the better option. Unless you’re stingy on power draw or heat output.
Nvidia honestly is better at everything GPU related to me. Better driver support, DLSS, etc. You’ll get a lot more out of the 4070.
If you want good raytracing and dlss go for nvidia. If your all about the FPS AMD
They are very close in performance. Both are great cards but the 7900 GRE can be found for 590€ (xfx) including VAT in my country, the cheapest 4070S is 615 (inno3d).
And AMD works very well with the open source kernel driver in Linux whereas support for Nvidia is more lacking. Especially with Wayland.
My personal preference goes to the AMD card due to more VRAM and Linux support with comparable performance to the 4070. More VRAM now might lead to better performance in futures titles that need/use it. But I doubt it’ll be anytime soon. I keep

But to be honest? You’ll probably be happy with either so pick one that fits your build design.
Performance + ram vs DLSS and better frame gen.
Hardware vs software.
The software can be upgraded, hardware cannot be.
Also AMD is improving their tech.

I went with 7900 gre because AFMF 2 is amazing.
Wouldn’t hesitate to get the 7900 GRE. It’s a great card. And it will work better on Linux when you abandon Windows later on.
If you only care about FPS/ money the 7900 GRE is the only answer imo. I got a 7900 GRE recently and i am very pleased with the performance , in CS2 i get a little more FPS than i got with a RTX 4070 TI before. Only thing that is worse is the software/drivers and features but i think the 7900GRE is more future proof because it has more RAM.
The games you play will cant benefit much from Nvidias extra features like dlss and ray tracing, neither needs upscalers for those games so 7900gre will be better due to the better raw performance and more vram will last longer for sure
Both are legit great. I personnaly went for 4070 super as typically nvidia cards retain value better and I enjoy pc building / plan to upgrade in a year or so.
I actually prefer the ryzen 4070
I would probably go for the 7900 GRE and overlock the memory, it is easy to do in the AMD Adrenalin software (just a single slider) and will give you a comfy performance uplift.
I got a 4070 Super. It’s great. It has many features that will let you play a heavily modded Cyberpunk 2077 with everything cranked up to the top at 1440p at around 45 fps.
I play the same games on the GRE and it’s a beast.
Could either of those run RDR2 at 4k max settings no RT 60fps ?
Pick AMD if you just want games. Pick Nvidia if you want games and AI tech, mostly the AI tech.
Id go with the 4070 for dlss. It will help you when you need it most.
If you’re asking a GPU to your specific games, the 7900 GRE is the choice.
If you’re also looking for the similar genre of games based on the games you’ve listed, still the 7900 GRE.
The general observation from your games doesn’t take full advantage of all of Nvidia’s features whereas you use more of 7900 GRE full potential.
In addition, with more VRAM from the 7900 GRE, it withstands another generational GPU upgrade. Most games generally use VRAM and you’d see more benefits for future releases of similar games you play. This means that because the 4070 Super has less VRAM than the 7900 GRE, you are knowingly gimping your future games of performance because the 4070 Super has less VRAM than the 7900 GRE.
Just a sway of threads from AMD owners generally wait 3 generations of GPU before they upgrade whereas Nvidia owners feel more benefits after 2 generational upgrades for them. Because of the constriction of less VRAM, Nvidia owners are inclined to upgrade more frequently vs AMD owners.

Personally I would go with the RX 7900 GRE it’s a fantastic card with more Vram and should perform better or on par with the 4070 super depending on the game. I’m not that impressed by ray tracing or the other recent Nvidia features. So I see the Rx 7900 as the better deal.
Both GPUs are good it will depende much the preferences. But the Skus for both cards are a little bit weak, for Radeon is better avoid Gigabyte and go Powercolor or Sapphire, even XFX will be better. For that 4070 super whould be a better choise to get the triple fan variant or other card with a more efficient cooling.
Go look at steam on how many ppl use what video card. I would buy nvidia just cuz of that. If you want more vram save a little more or change your build and get a super ti .
If it was me i would choose between super and ti super. Just for driver stability and dlss. Dont under estimate dlss.
7900 GRE better in everything except upscaling quality + Ray Tracing. Although AFMF 2 exists now and it’s pretty epic (frame gen for every game). For games that only support DLSS, you can use DLSS enabler (look it up on github) and it will replace DLSS with FSR 3.1 (also the framegen part), which has majorly improved upscale quality as well, so I wouldn’t go NVIDIA here.
The GRE is cheaper, has more VRAM and has more fans (I think the would make it better)
4070 super has less VRAM, a bit more expensive but has DLSS, Ray Tracing, and the YouTuber/Streamer stuff like encoding
