As per others there’s a PCIE card that should slot in there which physically changes the paths from a single 16x to dual 8x/8x depending on which side is inserted.

There is a switching card that belongs there that designates running one video card or running 2 cards in SLI mode. Not sure this board will work without the SLI switching card

As others have said this is to select between x8 x8 and x16 x1 for the pcie slots.
In other news, that looks like the original fan for the northbridge, these often failed.
My A8N-SLi Deluxe will turn 20 next year. Upgraded to vr running at almost the top end of what it could at the time, with 4GB 400MHz DDR memory, 120GB SSD, (replaced the 120GB HDD) 4400×2 athlon, 10Gb networking (absolutely pointless, poor CPU can’t keep up, and an Nvidia 1030 GT (about the worst GPU that’s modern – originally had two 7800GTXs, but win 10 doesn’t have sli drivers this old.
Top tip, if you ever want to experience CPU bottlenecks, this is worse than an atom powered stick PC.

That’s not a SO-DIMM, that’s a slot for stuff like PCIe cards for SSDs just to give an example, Asus use to do something similar with RAM slot look-alike, where they put in a riser so you could have like 2 SSD’s in 1 slot.

Damn, that motherboard is loaded… 8 SATA, 2 IDE, 2 Ethernet, up to 2x FireWire ports, optical audio output, up to 10x USB ports.
Idk the lighting is SODIMM I cannot see.
