I found this in my store room with 2 RAM sticks… just for My father is a computer engineer since 90's

    It’s a Pentium 3 from 1998. Back then CPUs were installed on cards like this and put onto a slot on the motherboard. This was done because the L2 cache on these chips took up so much space that they wouldn’t fit on a chip you would put into a socket on the motherboard. This didn’t last very long though, only the Pentium IIs, early Pentium IIIs and AMD’s equivalent (I think these were the K6 CPUs) used the slot design. The physical size of the cache decreased and Intel and AMD were able to go back to a regular chip design by the turn of the millenium.

    I remember holding one of these (pentium2) in my hand. And if I am remembering right I was able to put tape over 2 or 3 of the pins and make my pentium 2 300 mhz run at 450 mhz.

    No offense, but the name is right there. Pentium III, Slot 1.

    Slot 1 was an attempt to change CPU form factor from socket to slot, of course it failed, but Pentium IIs and Pentium IIIs were built on the form factor before it was abadoned.

    Oh it’s incredible to see this! I had a Celeron version of this, because although they were lightweight with less cache, they were supposedly easier to overclock, sometimes enough to offset the performance hit of the smaller cache. Back when I wanted to tweak more than I wanted things to work, and didn’t have the money to get good stuff anyway. 😅

    Awwww man, this CPU has so many memories for me, it’s one of the first cpus i built into a machine myself. P3 Slot 1.

    End of the 90s, being 18 years old, amazing movies getting released constantly, freedom. World was really looking up!

    It is a pentium III The socket was strange but it is a normal CPU , before pentium 4 and I-series

    These comments made me look up my first real PC’s CPU because I could’ve sworn it was a 866mhz Pentium 3 and I’ve never seen a slot CPU before – turns out that one was indeed just a regular chip. So not all Pentium 3s were slot CPUs.
