I don’t know if anybody has seen the layoff numbers that are allegedly taking place but

If Intel slimmed down to 124,800 in 2023 then it means they dropped around 6200 people , then the drop to todays numbers prior to the announced cuts would be 14,400 MORE people since then, so I don’t think that reporting is accurate. It would mean Intel has shed 20,200 or so jobs since October 2022s cuts were announced.
According to the article, as of today it’s 110,000 people and reports are saying that 10% of employees will be shown the door, roughly another 11,000 people.

In March of this year Intel was awarded 8.5 billion from the CHIPS act, I know foundries don’t get built over night but this is crazy.

I’m pretty sure the Intel sinking ship story kind of goes like this:
– Intel stagnates their hardware development and processor node for roughly a decade
– Competitor suddenly put the pressure on with products that perform close to or better than Intel
– Suddenly, Intel is scrambling to play catch-up to stay relevant
– Their new node costs them so much money that they are hardly making any money on CPUs. It’s also still not as efficient as the competitor
– The new CPUs are also struggling to keep up with the competitor, so they juice the crap out of them.
– There is also the possibility of loosening the QC standards so some CPUs get binned higher than they should be in order to can meet demand and make more margin
– CPUs are beginning to melt down
– Intel sticking their head in the sand and pretending nothing is wrong
It’s too bad this will definitely impact their GPU development. We needed more contenders to bring prices down.
So Intel fucked up and it’s the working man that pays the price. I wish companies were forced to retain their work force as punishment so they have to lose money as punishment.
These guys are regarded. It would’ve been cheaper to recall the affected chips and save consumer loyalty vs having their stock price get shorted to shit and lose employees to recoup.
The only person they should lay off is the CEO in a merger. How many more people must suffer for the misgivings of people in the ivory tower? Intel is absolutely in a death spiral and this will get worse before it gets better.
