In my experience, the only games that don’t run on Linux are the ones using kernel-level anti-cheats, and Doom 3 BFG Edition (which has a source port for Linux anyway). Other than that, I was pleasantly surprised at how many games I could run without tweaking thanks to Proton, Lutris and Bottles. Not much tweaking on the operating system either.

i use fedora liux and steam/holo os and i have’t had any software comtpatibilty issuse with games, i did have a really nanoying hardware incomptaibtly issue tho, my quest 3, it was a pain in the ass to set up, dealt with some kidna toxic people like oh if youc an;t compile from source ur linxu sin;t for you, i wasn;t even compaing abotu compling from soruce i was asking for trouble shootin g help affter the rpogram was giving me an error affter isntalling it. also some hwo got erros no one else had, if it wasn ;t for those weird error it would have been easy. but every one else i asked about it pretty nice even talked to one of the devs of the alvr project about some weird issue with h265 being capped at 80 mbs while h264 can go above 1gbs (i havea 6800)
tldr games work great for me but setting up quest vr (and onyl quest other headsets don;t have this issue) was kinda a pain in the ass but espicaly for me becasue i was getting weird errors
I use Linux on my HTPC but had nothing but problems on my gaming PC. Even on native titles like CSS and CSGO (at the time). Probably NVIDIA related though.

The only time I’ve ever spent a long time speeding up Linux was when I forgot mutter had an option to automatically close XWayland when not in use and I tried to make my own systemd service to do this.

I really wanted to get away from windows. i installed Ubuntu as the forums at the time said it was easy to use. i got it installed and had no clue what to do. just installing a simple program like winrar required a code of sorts to be entered. I just remember thinking, This must be why more people don’t use linux.
I sadly dragged my stupid ass back to windows. it’s obviously for those who have a few more brain cells than me. anyway if i ever stumble upon a linux system that has regular installers and doesn’t make my usb’s unusable i’ll give it another shot.
p.s. i did fix my usb. IN WINDOWS!

The main problem with PC gaming under Linux? Support. There are still few native Linux games and 95% of it is Windows apps. Compatibility layers are great, but they are rarely guaranteed to work, meaning that even if a Windows game works today under Linux, it may not tomorrow because of anti-cheat, a Linux incompatible update, etc.
And this extends into hardware, especially new stuff. Linux HDR is nascent, multiple VRR monitors still don’t work with nVidia cards. Even PC VR, something Valve has contributed a great deal, has languished under Linux even as PC VR has held its own over the years with a fair amount of content and support from Meta and now Sony with the PS VR 2 starting next week.

If I wanted to run games that had kernel level cheat codes? Sure. Otherwise, I usually get anywhere from 5-20% better fps on Linux than I do on Windows (same machine). So, not doing anything to try and get any speed boost. Steam + Lutris installed and just go.

I’ve been gaming on PC since ~2007 and fully switched to Linux in 2018. Even though I’ve been on Linux about half as long as Windows I’ve had less than a quarter of the problems on Linux vs Windows.
Realistically most of those issues were when I started using Linux and was hell bent on using Manjaro KDE. I’m starting to use KDE again and it’s come a long way but I will never touch Manjaro ever again.
