Japanese soft power was strong then and is still strong now. Just look at how many Japanese things are in this picture. Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Nintendo 64. And considering how Nintendo 64 was dominated by Japanese games, he must’ve had some Japanese games lying around in his room. He has probably played Zelda and Mario.
