I mean, SOME of it can be actually great…

Don’t get me wrong, DLC is usually not what it used to be anymore, but there’s several cases when they turn out to be pretty good, but this is ONLY when they actually add content for the players to enjoy more gameplay instead of just adding skins.

“The Passing” for Left 4 Dead is a great example, I believe.

there was a day we used to use the term “expansion pack” because it was pretty specific.

Now DLC gets used as a blanket term that can include everything from some cosmetic shit that doesn’t add anything to the game, all the way to an expansion that doubles the playtime.

We should probably go back to using specific words, the industry doesn’t want to though. Expansion packs are great, especially free ones, but some are worth the extra money.

  3. This all comes down to making informed consumer decisions.

    WRT DLCs:
    * if a developer is using the promise of DLCs as an excuse to ship an unfinished product, don’t buy the product.
    * If a DLC is released and doesn’t provide the value that its price tag carries, don’t buy the product.

But there can be good DLCs that expand an already well developed game, and provide content value that matches the price tag.

But are some developers using the name “DLC” to ship overpriced microtransactions with less of a negative connotation? 100%, which is why informed consumer decisions are just becoming more important.

Not when its planned and just part of the game thats paywalled. Remember when we use to call it disc locked content.

Phantom Liberty or Shadow of Erdtree are DLC worth paying for.

These are almost like mini sequels to the game.

When it comes to battle passes and skins.

I will gladly f you up in my default free skin and t bag your premium skin body. it feels good doesn’t it getting trashed by someone who spent $zero cash inside the game. enjoy.

The issue with DLC is that it has been bloated heavily with grubby greed items. DLC used to mean addition content, not quite an expansion, but not an update. Modern DLC is mostly cosmetics that could have been earnable in game, but were taken out to be sold back to you.

I mean DLC can be well made or not like the base game can. It can be a good price or not for the amount of stuff you get to do in it. I dont think its inherently bad on the level of the others.

I think the problem is we we dont see the development and publisher decisions that get made that would take content that would be in the main game in a universe without DLC, and release it later as DLC. The pessimistis among us perhaps assume this is happening almost all the time, so DLC looks pretty bad to them. And there is also something to say for game conservation and physical media fans always waiting around for some definitive edition.

But I think there is not too much wrong with a scenario where they wrap the base game on schedule and discovered some cool stuff about the engine while making the base game or finishing some ambitious concept that got cut and making a DLC around it. They dont need to spin up manufacuring again which hopefully keeps the price down and takes way less time to launch. If you like the game and the DLC is good, its just more of a good thing.

Nintendo has released some Killer DLC on the switch (Torna the Golden country, future reedemed, the cinder wolves, fell xenologue, the Mario kart 8 Booster course pass)

Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches for Dishonored are simply fantastic! They add to the game without being necessary, and they set up the sequel. So good!

The Sims and total war dlcs make me angry, it’s like 500 bucks for everything

As a battlefield player I wish they would go back to DLC where you would get 4 new maps multiple new guns and vehicles every few months. Instead its battles passes with 1 new map and like two guns.

No, none of it can be ‘great’, let alone even good. Get a grip

Disgaea got flack for selling a DLC that users found out was already in the disk at launch date.

Have you seen Final Fantasy 15? Half of the game was locked behind DLC!
