I guess is sata hot swap feature enabled on your disks in motherboard bios/uefi settings
When I had an eGPU for my laptop, one of the earliest ones that connected via ExpressCard, I could do this with my GTX 660 (and it worked! It didn’t recognize it when plugged back until reboot, though)
