Not that necessary anymore as hardware is way more powerful nowadays. An example of a use case used to be streamers, they’d have one system purely for gaming and one system purely for streaming so that both tasks wouldn’t lower the other’s performance.
I own one, a Corsair 1000D which is currently empty, and honestly I can’t justify having such a big case anymore. I’ve thought about building a gaming system + NAS system in it but it’s just way more convenient to have a standalone NAS and a smaller PC.
I will probably sell it at some point… it was pretty cool with a custom loop inside of it though, I MIGHT build a system in there mostly as an art piece. A stupidly expensive NAS perhaps.

I’ve got my PC in a Corsair 1000D and plan to build a streaming PC in it as well. Honestly though if I could start the whole build over I’d probably just get two cases since I guarantee a mid tower plus whatever a mini-itx fits into would take up less space than my massive tower. Then again, I am looking forward to having both PCs cooled by the same custom loop and you certainly couldn’t do that practically with two cases

Back then dual PC was common for streamers who need a second PC for encoding, since you only have Intel 4 core CPU even at high end and if you put 2 for encoding then you won’t have enough horsepower for your games. Nowadays you can buy a 16 core CPU and allocate 4 cores just for that task no problem. AMD basically killed that market segment singlehandedly with ryzen 3000, or even earlier.
