There are only few games that RT is worth using. Example Elden Ring RT is waste of time laziest implementation i’ve ever seen in AAA. This game runs like shiat on PC.

Alex is right. 8GB cards like on the 2080 and 3070 is too little, but the fear around VRAM *currently* is massively overblown by people who don’t understand how VRAM works.

Every few months when I remember that I own a VR headset I play VRChat, a notoriously memory-hungry game. Because people with 3090s and 4090s will have 20GB of data being *cached* on their GPU, people constantly recommend overkill GPU setups just to run the game which released in the *GTX 980 era*. I’ve used 8GB cards just fine and have never been VRAM bottlenecked on my 2080Ti outside of very specific situations that most people wont find themselves in. From my observation deepening on your headset resolution and if you own a Quest or not the game uses like 5-6GB on average and anything else is mostly just cached data thats not required to output frames unless youre idiotic and choose to not cull in an instance with over 30 people in which case you’re still most likely gonna run into CPU bottlenecks before GPU

The 2070/80 and the 3070 really should have shipped with more than 8GB, but there’s only a handful of mainstream games right now where you run out on 8GB on **max settings.** And you can just turn down texture resolution as always which we *did do* back in the day before people got comfy with 6-8GB cards playing games that only required around 3-4GB. 8GB wasn’t gonna live on forever but we’re in the beginning days where its starting to show its age meanwhile you have people all over reddit basically saying that if you have an 8GB card then you cant run any new games at even 1080p.

Bro I barely skirted through 1080p games with 4gb of VRAM with my 1650 super and didn’t have too much trouble, but I’m not arguing on behalf of Nvidia.

Id prefer if devs did NOT consider this… Idgaf about handicapping things so other people don’t feel bad wtf is that. I paid a lot of money for my high end components, not to be held back by a bunch of poor people with 10 year old gpus telling people what to do

  5. I’ve never even cared about VRAM until I started using diffusion models. I’m getting the full use of my 24gb of VRAM at least.

Alex is wrong, as caching improves performance and is part of the “requirement” for top performance. Alex is bright, but he doesn’t have a deep technical background and it sometimes shows.

I love DF, but they don’t understand memory pressure, either system or video. Constantly refreshing assets in and out of memory creates memory pressure and sucks up all the available bandwidth, which ends up as noticeable performance dips.

  7. so 8 gb is alright for 1080p if you don’t do RTX. gotcha

It’s a high-level answer for something that can also be addressed by simply offering more VRAM.

Alex’s answer is more holistic and accurate, but the argument of offering more VRAM is not something that should be argued against. Both of these answers can coexist, actually.

My issue with arguments about 8gb vram cards is that all those arguments technically should apply to 6gb cards as well. But anyone who has a 6gb card will tell you a very different story. I have a laptop with a 2060 and a desktop with a 12gb 3080. Laptop is 1080p and I can go even lower due to the 15″ screen but the desktop is ultrawide 1440p and 4k. I’ve run into vram issues on the laptop constantly. Streaming only saves frametimes and textures suffer a lot. Either pop-in or lower res.

8gb imo is low end and shouldnt be even considered for mid range cards.

12GB on the RTX 4070 Super is such bullshit, anyone who says otherwise is a shill.

  11. I have a 3060 Ti in my HTPC and there’s a number of games I’ve played now where I have enough performance to run 4K but not enough VRAM which is a bit frustrating. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Diablo 4 are two examples. I am hoping the next generation of cards finally adds more VRAM.
