I got hella lot of downvotes for stating that m.2 screws are not standard, had all kinds of people come to me and tell me they are standard.
Guys dont trust everything on the internet, nvme screws can vary a lot in sizes (and aren't standardized in any way) contact your Mobo manufacturer to sort out the correct size screw for your SSDs or buy the standoffs with the right screw already and outfit the old ones.

This is hilarious. People are confusing metric screw specs with the “M2” SSD designation. A 2mm diameter screw is in fact referred to as an M2 screw. This means “metric 2”.

You’re acting like an m.2 screw is a load bearing screw and not extremely over kill. If the screw fits (even if it’s a bit janky) than your fine
I just order kits for my build so I have a shit ton of extra screws. The downside is I’m so unorganized I’m still hunting for them.
If you have a microcenter near you, you can buy bags of them for each MB manufacturer.
I’ve gotten away with a washer and whatever random screw I can find. So long as it stays secure and holds the m.2 in place, I haven’t had an issue yet lol.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen an M.2 SSD come with a screw and I’ve bought and used many different brands. Still good advice in general.

Which is why every motherboard should have some kind of tool-less M.2 holding system. Even cheap boards should have little plastic retainers.
I had this issue and the retailer just gave me a little rubber band screw that you just push in and then pull up to release the M.2, even better than a screw.
My motherboard doesn’t come with screws for the M.2. It has a clip instead. All mobo manufacturers should go this route.

Actually, from when I was assembling my own PC, there are two types of metric screws. One is M2 and other is M2.5 (I think). One has very dense screwing and other has less dense. Each is used in something else.
Good thing I ransacked a few computers with various sizes of screw hardware. It’s saved me with fans, ssds, and pcie brackets.

When I discovered screws can be made in metric or in bald eagles per washing machines I was blown away. I was building a DIY boom arm to support an extension for a cymbal in my drum set and I could not get a screw to go in. Turns out the dimensions were right, but the threads were in burger units.

I got my motherboard second hand from a friend, and realized I didn’t have a screw for the m.2 drive I had just ordered. I dug through all of my random bins and bags of hardware, finally found one that fits on some random fan or something.
Just goes to show you should absolutely never get rid of your bin of extra cables and random hardware, it will probably come in handy the day after you throw it out.

Just use the one that’s included with your MOBO. Don’t make shit more complicated than it needs to be.
I can confirm. My motherboard came without the screw and I need to buy separately and I need to sand the screw a little to enter.
