16GB at a minimum is what I deploy. Win11 with just Outlook and Teams running is pushing almost 8GB alone.

The company users who kvetch about their laptop ram are the same users who think they know more about IT than they do. For the vast majority of company computers 8gb is plenty. If you need more your job title will likely already be assigned more.

by accident I found out that our IT department does have ram to upgrade the laptops to 16 GB.
They suck at communicating stuff they have available…

The last IT job I had was at a place that prided itself on being a “forward thinking tech company with a mogul/empire minded ceo” (this is how they see and sell it). They still have 2015-2016 MacBooks, 2016 iMacs, and 5th gen intel desktops (4790) assigned for daily use. Some of those so swollen the screws had popped out of the MacBook Pro case due to the battery swelling being so bad. They would boot camp windows 10 and keep it alive. No care for fire hazards and I had to push to fix those laptops hard. Ps they already had a fire and still didn’t care…forward thinking.

I have 16 gb of ram and a 12 gen intel on my new work laptop and it am so happy about it I always have to have some much bs open to do my job it’s a life saver.

In my company only people who need it get 16gb, like devs and designers. Also executives with high end laptops. Rest of us only get 8gb with 8th gen cpu

Minimum RAM for anything now a days is around ~20gb at least, even 16gb is not enough for things to be perfectly smooth with that instantaneous snapy reponse with many things open and running at the same time.
Of course CPU and the disk are also very important, even more so. Any good NVME (doesn’t need to be expensive) makes a huge difference.

Ugh the MSP I work for now – most machines in the entire company has 8GB of ram as default(probably procured during COVID, what kinda psycho says 8GB bare minimum is fine when all the tracking software and antivirus defaults start up to 6gbs) and we’ve been trying to upgrade people to at least 16GB but companies and their budgets. Recently they purchased a couple 32GB ram machines but it’s not enough to replace thousands of users in this company. Ugh

I learned thus from an old timer.
Step 1. Upgrade the RAM yourself.
Step 2. Remove the extra RAM when you have to eventually turn your laptop back in.
The $50 he’d spend on RAM saved his sanity, so to him it was worth it.
