yeah, absolutely. there some good benefits to streaming games. but the drawbacks can be rough. people need to go into this with knowledge of what they’re getting.

If owning media is of major import, then Microsoft is the absolute last entity you should buy a console from. They’re actively working against physical media and are pushing everything to Gamepass/digital sales.

Spencer can say all he wants about the importance of physical media but the writing is on the wall for Xbox.

  3. DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC

Yes, absolutely, why are you even asking this?

It was a problem even back on the 360: if you had to get a new one for whatever reason (RRoD, stolen, thrown out the window by an angry lover), any digital games or DLC you’d bought *could* be transferred to the new one, but would only work if you were online. (Can’t remember if they ever changed that).

Then of course you had Don “The Biggest Idiot in Gaming” Mattrick say that if you didn’t want to be always-online, don’t get an Xbox One, stick with the 360. I can only imagine the MS brass lost their shit over that, and it was a blow the brand never fully recovered from. The analogy I used was that it was like buying a car that, if you didn’t connect to the internet once a day, you couldn’t drive, but you could still sit in it and listen to the radio.

Now obviously, some games HAVE to have a connection to function properly — MMOs, PvP games, etc — but you shouldn’t need a server check to play a *single-player game* that you installed/downloaded.

Welcome to the argument 20 years too late

  5. bigwreck94

I can’t even sign in to play my physical media with my save files – this is nonsensical.

  6. kingOofgames

I think even if you buy physical games they almost all require a connection to play.

Idk if anyone has had luck with any physical games they have?

  7. CheddarWave

Upsides and downsides to going digital. Puts us in positions like this but also saves the space of physical discs.

  8. Shakmaaaaaaa

Might as well go ahead and start your mid life retro game collection.

  9. Melodic-Piano9727

Games should be physical…but, we do perhaps live in the digital age now. Just wait another 20 years..🤯

  10. BiGMiKDiX

Go to settings and change network status to offline…should be able to play any non live service games that are downloaded to the Xbox (some GP games included if they are not live service).

  11. DeathByPickles

Bummer. I was hoping to play some first descendant after work. I guess I should be grateful I tend to buy discs

  12. Forsaken_Hermit

What digital giveth digital taketh away.

  13. actomain

I legit can’t even play fucking minecraft java edition right now. This is a clear warning sign, in my eyes

  14. futurespacecadet

This is great for PR as these consoles try to move all digital /s

  15. Moody_GenX

I can’t play my games offline because I gameshare with my son and grandchildren…

  16. -Sinn3D-

I have a ps5, pc and series X. Of course I decided to dl First Descendant on the series x… and it’s the one that doesn’t work when I get home.

  17. meatshield72

It is a huge problem, what can we as the consumer do about it? What are we willing to do about it? What should we do about it?

It’s not as easy as we once thought anymore because it seems just buying physical games will not be helpful according to some users because they can’t sign in and that is affecting physical games as well.

  18. Why don’t people just set up their Xbox as a home console ?

You can use it offline in that case (for 30 days without internet).

  19. Airblazer

Jesus it’s a few hours outage. Go outside and get some fresh air. You still have 364 days of the year to play.

  20. Nevermordor

What’s funny is that I can log in to any online game except what MS owns, i.e. Bethesda titles, etc.

  21. wolfman3412

Stop buying games that require sign-ins. Don’t pay for game pass or open betas. Buy physical games, play retro systems. The corporate greed won’t stop if you keep buying it

  22. ShieldPapa

I’m so happy that I grew up during the Seventh gen of consoles. I am currently playing Peter Jackson’s King Kong on my 360 and had no clue there was a sign in issue right now.

  23. Sure_Ad_3390

It’s definately one of the things a ton of people said when all this shit was getting going a decade back.

  24. I’ve always tried my absolute best to support physical media. It’s really sad to see it dying out.

  25. Frank_Midnight

We need inconvenience credits for this.

  26. Tacitus86

That’s why I buy physical as often as I can

  27. MikeLanglois

Funny how the PSN outage that took place today dint warrant any articles

  28. KitsuTheOkami

Yep I can’t even play cod campaigns, I love the big white useless block of plastic sitting next to my TV right now.

  29. TheWeinerThief

Eh.. was finally gonna grind out the Warframe event. Shit happens though.

  30. Dead0nTarget

Absolutely. Recently Ubisoft shut down servers for The Crew and now it is a great classic game that can no longer be played by those who bought it. To me, when you buy a game you should be able to play it indefinitely. Of course, this is an issue brought on by the “always online” game model that is so common today even in single player games.

On another note, I use this as reason to cut back my gaming sessions time. It’s simply impractical to sink more and more time into discovering and collecting pixels in a game that an developer like Ubisoft or larger entity like Microsoft and one day just decide that those hours logged was for naught as they shut the game down keeping players from ever retrieving their items and progress. Don’t even get me started on the fact that with the trend of more and more micro transactions now those items and progress in a game are not just invested with time but monetarily as well.

In fact, it’s almost enough to make one revert to the older consoles without online dependency and hard copy disc or cartridges to hold onto their gaming investments.

  31. Elegant_Spot_3486

It is. Not that we needed more reasons.

  32. Bussy4Me

Is this still happening? I’m being told my parental controls have no internet access. Lol wtf
