I’ve had MS Excel calculate 100s of thousands of rows. Last time I tried to do a few thousands in Libreoffice calc it froze really bad. OP has the concepts of up and down wrong

I get that is a meme but while at some areas Libre really does good ( such as Writer, Word counterpart ) , Impress (Powerpoint counterpart ) is fucking awful.

I can think of 2 things libre does better than excel:
– handling CSV files. When you open one, it will immediately ask, before opening, what’s the separating char(s) and offer you a preview of how it will open so you know it will open correctly right from the get go. It will also save these settings so all you need to do next time you open another file with the same format is click “ok”. Excel is a moron that will ask nothing and open the file wrong frequently.
– coming from the previous one, if in those files there’s columns with big numbers in a cell (imagine badcodes, something with 13 or more numbers), excel will, by default, show it in scientific notation (5.3x10e-12 for example). If you remember to convert those columns into text right then, you’re fine, excel will show you the full number. If you forget to do that and happen to save your file, you just lost everything but the first numbers in that column because if you now convert it to text/number all you’ll see is 530000000000000). As far as i know, there’s no way to configure excel to not do this and has fucked me over several times over the years. To me this is a huge bug that has never been fixed. Regardless how the cell is shown to the user, the original data should always remain in there, at no point there should be data loss.
Libre office’s calc will not show anything in SN by default and will not lose information like that, which is a massive help to me.
However, the microsoft product does connect to sql databases much better and has VBA macros which is massive. Many of my accountant clients live and die by these and they will not work in libreoffice, google sheets or MS Excel online, for that matter. It also seems to handle huge files much better, the others have the tendency to hang.
