The plan wasn’t necessarily for Alan Wake II to make a lot of money. That’s why Epic fully funded and published it.
The plan was to get a lot of store traffic, and when people were used to using the store, they’ll be more likely to use it in the future. And…it worked really well in that regard.
EGS gained millions of new users from the point Alan Wake II released, and those people likely bought something else there with the coupon that everyone who bought it got.
The more interesting question is: Why is Alan Wake II of all games, blocked from sale in New Zealand? lol I did some searching, and see a lot of NZ players talking about playing it.

The sad fate of all Epic exclusives is that they’re doomed to wallow in obscurity as long as they’re stranded in EGS.
If they really wanted it to make money they’d list it on Steam, but that clearly isn’t the point. Sucks that Epic has to resort to shitty anti-consumer practices like exclusivity.
So, is Epic trying to kill the studio? Give it to Microsoft; they won’t beat around the bush.
Genuine question, always curious to learn more about how NZ works as a country, is the legal reason on NZ’s end, like do they have some anti-consumer law that prevents real competition from coming in? I’m assuming Steam is in NZ.
Are there any other gaming services not allowed in NZ?
Or is this just because Epic doesn’t want to do business in NZ for some stupid reason?
