I couldn’t actually submit this to 3D mark because the Pentium does not support official GeForce drivers right now, so I am using drivers form Windows Update, which 3D mark doesn’t validate. So I submitted this to hwbot.org. Incredibly, I am not even the lowest submission – there are folks running 2080’s getting worse scores than this. So the benchmark seems to be highly GPU bound.
I have a soft spot for LGA775. That was my first real PC build and I just love running super obscure and ridiculous hardware combinations on it.
I tried doing this with a Pentium D 805 but the chip won’t run Windows 10. I am pretty sure that the 945 is the oldest, worst chip that will possibly run Windows 10.
I have the Pentium on a Raidmax 240 AIO cooler. Yes, they still make LGA775 AIO coolers new today. I have it cranked up to the maximum volts the mobo supports (1.65 I think) and some DDR2-800 ram. The chip will boot into Windows up to 4.92ghz, but won’t run a benchmark very well, so the best I could do was 4.88ghz. But the chip really started to shine once I disabled spectre/meltdown protection (which makes sense since the Pentium 4 has a notoriously long pipeline, so hindering branch prediction will cripple it). Watching this benchmark at 33FPS on a 18 year old processor is NUTS.
I am 100% certain that this is the world record holder for this hardware combination and i am 95% certain that this world record will exist for the rest of time, as I could not imagine anyone is going to run this combo.
Hopefully I can keep this chip alive for another few generations of PCIe graphics cards.
I also have a Core2Quad system that I plan on exercising as well. I anticipate it will destroy the Pentium D.
