hot take: I’m (moderately) fine with this instead of them shoving banner ads and hide part of the game screen or interstitial ads like during loading screen
this kind of ad placement has been used since the PS2 era if I recall correctly (might be wrong though since I can’t pinpoint any game that use this method).
at the very least you’re not forced to see it (can still drive/move past through) and also give you a chance to vandalize it if the game allows.

Didn’t NFSU2 have ads like this for BestBuy?
furry_husker
i mean if they make them like realistic billboards then its fine, BUT WHY THE F WOULD I ACCEPT ADDS IN MY 50$ game???
Sonic200000
If that happens its easily implemented
Examples i love are Euro truck simulator and farming simulator 22 I love how they have ads.
In ETS 2 its ads from driving companys to maybe even get new drivers interested
In farming sim 22 they have the same roadside banners with ads for equipment from DLCs.
Both of these add a bit of you could say realism and is just neat non disruptive and a creative way to maybe even benefit.
SoRaang
They did it in NFS underground or something.
Aggravating-Dot132
I can accept only ONE type of ads in games. If they are done in a creative way.
Like, a special skin for a car with a sticker of another game from that publisher. Or a billboard with a specific ad for something related to the partner/publisher (like, game is sponsored by AMD/Nvidia, so why put their chip on a billboard with a creative slogan). And so on.
Also launchers. But that’s fine as it is.
Bossnage
this is still infinitely less awful than any form of pop-up ads
Hairless_Human
What would make this hilarious is if the billboards needed a constant online connection so they can easily switch them out when need be. Even more funny is if they make it to where you need an online connection at all times, even if it’s single player. I say funny btw because I seriously wouldn’t put it past them.
Stang_21
Yeah, besides slippery slopes and stuff (if this is fine, might as well put in loading screen, once that is common might as well put it in ingame radio, once that is common might as well….. put it on the HUD), i don’t want iphone ads in a racing game, put car ads there or keep it fictional. Also they will likely at some point utilize the live-ad model, where youtube-style ads make their way into the game, so I’ll be paying 150$ for a game filled with scam+porn ads. Thanks, I’ll stick with beamng.drive

NFS Carbon had T-Mobile Ads

I mean even this is gross, but knowing EA its gonna be way more intrusive than that.

I don’t much care for ads in my full priced games, however I would not be opposed to product placement. Instead of a q phone, just stick an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy in there. Need to go to a coffee shop, go into a Starbucks or a McDonald’s.
Companies pay a lot of money to have their products featured in a movie or TV show, do they not understand having their products featured in a video game is the same thing?
AliensFuckedMyCat
They tried this in quake live, but it didn’t really work because players would only see the ad for like, milliseconds as they rocket jumped passed before getting blasted by a railgun (or whatever).
But if they’re going to insist on ads in games, I’d rather it be like this, as it’s just like, what it’s actually like outside anyway (much to my annoyance, fuck ads, and fuck anyone in advertising or marketing, bunch of scumbags).
ALUCARDHELLSINS
Why do people actually care about this? As long as the ads fit the theme of the game and don’t break the lore go for it, I’d rather see a ad someone actually spent a large amount of time on than a fake ad the devs put in that they only spent 30 minutes on
Able-Wing9908
Given how these companies seem to be disconnected to the real world, They will probably show an Ad every time your car crashes out
agemennon675
That’s a good way of doing it not the on your face you have to see it way
Homicidal_Pingu
Tbh I don’t really mind ads being placed as they would be in reality, so for example cards between rounds of UFC transitions, adverts around the ground in FIFA, billboards in a city. If anything it would bring more realism to an open world game set in a city
stackfrost
I honestly want to see more real adda in Fifa/FC on the guard rails of the fields. Feels more real to me.
niky45
honestly, I wouldn’t be even half mad about those.
it’s so fitting
MojordomosEUW
Oh, you are so naive. They will do full screen pop ups some day, and people will have to install adblockers for games. Mark my words.
AndTheBandsPlayedOn
i actually like ads like this, reminds me of NFSU2 (Need For Speed Underground 2) and the billboards it used to have up. I feel like this but with the option to disable them would be best.
RevolutionaryCarry57
NFS Underground 2 had Cingular Wireless and Best Buy billboards. Tbh I don’t hate these non-intrusive ads where it makes sense.

Lol, nah try moving it onto the HUD

Totally cool with the billboards having real adds like that. Something since I was a kid always thought would be a good idea. Just nothing streaming like interrupting the experience.
Macshlong
Absolutely fine IF they are the only ads in the game.
