For the first time in 28 years, Super Mario 64 has been beaten without using the A button – and it only took 86 hours

I knew about the 1/2 A press because of that one video but this is unexpected

Oh I didn’t need to be reminded that this game is 28 years old….

Guess I’m going to need to see the video. I’m not sure how you’d even enter a level without the A button. Or open a door. And maybe the title screens are timed but thought you need to hit it to start the level too.

    >As Ukikipedia lays out, this was accomplished thanks to the decades-spanning foundation of A-press save discoveries accumulated by the speedrunning community. Ukikipedia gives special mentions to “Mr_Robert_Z, Bottles704, Thiago Trujillo, Mp16z, and most notably, bobmario511, who uploaded numerous videos in his channel dedicated to the A Button Challenge.”

Sounds like it took a lot more time and people than the usual speedruns in games

  5. In reality, the title is a bit misleading.

The player in question used the jump to prepare the entire level (cloning with the bomb glitch, etc.) and then replayed the level without using the A button this time.

So the player still used the A button (jump).
This doesn’t take away from the achievement itself, but the title is a bit misleading.

So… for the first time ever, then? Or did someone manage it just after the game was released?

Why would someone even attempt this? No, how would the idea to even attempt occur to someone?

Can’t wait for the Summoning Salt video breakdown on this one. “And that’s when ShitballsMcGee… finally broke the record”

Some people just have too much time lol

I did that a long time ago and my time was a lot lower. It was easy. All I did was change the controller input scheme.

I can do that, too. I just rebound jump. What’s the big deal?

Have they done it with the original?

  13. EducatedTard

I bet they used a playstation controller to do it.

    How is this worth discussing?

Someone went out of their way to beat a horrible game using a horrible method.

  15. Squibbles01

How many parallel universes did this take?

There’s something about not being able to jump in games that pisses me off and annoys me. I’m not even a “jumper” in mmos – like people who just run around and jump all the time – but having my ability to jump taken away (the torghast power in WoW that took away your ability to jump in exchange for a buff or certain mechanics in ff14 for example) makes me feel actually annoyed and infuriated for some reason.

This just reminds me of that.

Sounds like it actually took 28 years
