The majority of HDDs for consumers last around a decade. The HDDs that do fail usually fail in the first two years which is where this misconceptions comes from (on top of servers running their drives 24/7 which is where a lot of this data comes from).
If your HDD is older than 2-3 years and you don’t run it 24/7 for 3-5 years straight then you can usually expect it to last 7-10 years and still be perfectly fine. We measure life expectancy by power-on hours and most drives are fine up to 30-50k hours.
This meme will make people think that their hard drives are probably gonna die once they get past then 3-5 year mark when in reality they probably only have like 1.5 years of power on time

I have an old 2 terabyte hdd with 3,555,000 gbs of data written on it and she’s still going strong in HWinfo says that it’s perfectly fine no warning about it dying either
So just over 3 and a half petabytes read and she’s all good

I have a 500gb western digital ‘my book’ purchased circa 2006 and it’s currently spinning on my desk. At this point I’m just keeping it because it’s lasted so long.

seagate is an outlier and should be ignored. of all the HDDs i’ve seen fail only one of them wasn’t a seagate.
