Is the AC community OK?

The community of anything on Twitter is not “ok” lol

  2. Ap0kalypt0

Most of these people are not part of the ac community mate. They probably didnt even give a fuck about the franchise prior to the reveal of yasuke.

  3. SuperSanity1

I love how The Last Samurai is just… there. No context.

  4. MurderinAlgiers

If this is suprising to you then you havent been paying attention

I mean some people definitely make stupid arguments, but is definitely a missed opportunity.

Ubisoft could have made an actual more historical Japanese AC game(GoT is not historically accurate) but instead they went with Yasuke and not a japanese samurai, and made him a sword fighting samurai(samurai mainly used spears and guns like most warriors in that time period).

They should’ve just go with Naoe.

I want no part in this discourse so ima just say The Last Samurai is an amazing movie.

  7. TwinChops

I mean it is wierd to play as a black dude – or in general non asian person in a game that is set in japan.

  8. ComeonmanPLS1

It’s not the AC community. It’s gamers.

  9. Krakengreyjoy

I love the guy who is arguing that Egypt isn’t in Africa

  10. Occams_P1112_Aigaion

The Ace Combat community is very much OK, tho we would like a new game as well

  11. LordDeckem

For me it’s less about who the protagonists are and more about the style of gameplay changing throughout the years. Ever since they started using an inventory system with item rarity i haven’t been able to get into it anymore.

I don’t think anyone expected a white protagonist in here, most expected an AC game set in japan with a stereotypical japanese ninja as the protagonist, the black samurai thing is on its own interesting, but it is not the trope many of us wanted for when AC finally happened in japan. The reasons behind it, in the state of nowadays culture, seems like diversity pandering, so the fact that the one black samurai existed doesn’t change that. I’m not from the US, we don’t have the racial tensions the US have here, I just wanted to play a stereotypical japanese ninja to satisfy the power fantasy, but it’s fine, there are other games catering to that. And btw, just because a black samurai existed doesn’t stop it from being “out of place”, that’s why that story is noteworthy.

As an Asian dude and AC fan, I don’t really care about Yasuke being in the game or not, I just feel robbed a little of the spotlight that could’ve went to an Asian male.

They already have an assassin’s creed placed in Africa featuring an African protagonist. It is Bayek in Egypt.

  15. phara-normal

Today I learned: Egypt isn’t a part of Africa apparently. Did I miss something?

    Too much free time.

    Too much of a strawberry.

Gaming community 20-30 years ago and now, phew, what a difference.

  17. Shatterbrained_

Just butthurt people throwing the word woke around

  18. Ghostbuster_119

Not gonna lie, a asassins creed game loosely based (or is it fully based?) On yasuke sounds absolutely fucking cool.

  19. HypeIncarnate

I haven’t played an AC game since Origins and I don’t have time for a Witcher 3 style of game every single time.

  20. PrufrockAlfred

Didn’t one of the Asian cast members of *The Last Samurai* say recently that he’s tired of white people trying to explain to him why he should find the movie offensive?

  21. SolidDrake117

People dont realize that William Adams from Nioh is based on a factual person who was actually a real samurai. Ignorance will never go away and we just have to share this place with it unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♂️

  22. Bob_Juan_Santos

to paraphrase that one guy from that pretty funny movie:

    “Suck my community”

  23. This may be a controversial take but… does representation matter or not? Or does it only matter with certain groups? Culturally this is super confusing. I often feel like Asians get shafted on representation in America

  24. burndtdan

Nioh 2 let you make the protagonist black if you want and had a boss that was a black man named the Obsidian Samurai.

  25. Of you don’t like what’s being done with a franchise, don’t buy the game. Easy. I wasn’t going to buy it regardless because AC games are so full of bloat a bullshit now that I can’t bring myself to care about the franchise.

  26. heurekas

    Racists are rarely OK.

Also, love that Origins back and forth haha.

  27. OdoWanKenobi

So, I really don’t get it. I’m a white male. I have never had a single issue playing as a video game character who wasn’t like me. It’s never even been a consideration for me. If the skin color or gender of a game protagonist negatively impacts your enjoyment, you have serious issues.

  28. bigguccisosaxx

Imagine being so entitled thinking devs owe you to create characters you want to see. They should do whatever they want. It’s their game.

  29. LordEdgeward_TheTurd

I didnt know ignorant rednecks played AC. I remember reading something awhile back on why they didnt make a AC with ninjas because it seemed like a given money maker and ubisofts reasoning was because they didnt want to go full cliche or like it was low hanging fruit or something similar, guess their coffers are running low and their think tanks on empty.

  30. AC Origins took place in Africa and nobody complained that the main character was African.

  31. HMSJamaicaCenter

AC stood for either Ace Combat or Assetto Corsa when I clicked this and now I regret it

  32. CranberryPuffCake

The woke slider comment is the one that makes me laugh the most.

Apparently woke weirdos are the ones who hate everything but it’s actually these idiots that hate anything and everything that’s different.

  33. HatesFatWomen

Gonna be interesting to see the only black man in Japan in a huge armor be an assassin and blend in the crowd to hide

  34. JadowArcadia

Why do posts like this pop up as if it’s a suprise. These are the same people with these kinds of opinions. It’s not like all died all of sudden. Stop giving them attention

  35. cyberexplorer97

Frankly, i thought it was woke crap, but with a little help from my friend Google, you find out that Yasuke (who is the samurai mentioned in the game) actually was a black, african Samurai.

  36. Fastball82

People are going to be insufferable regardless. Cant please everyone 100% of the time.

  37. I’m loving it.
Even though I checked out of the franchise after Assassin’s Creed 2, I’ll be checking the meltdowns all the way to release date.
I did buy the bundle with origins, odyssey and Valhalla though…

  38. Zealousideal-Plan454

Not sure, brainrot its a very prominent mind fungus these days, but barely care anymore for any AC games that comes after Black Flag.

  39. Did you know that most Jim Crow laws are technically fair, unbiased and have nothing to do with race. And yet somehow they typically only appear in very specific places with very specific impact.

Much as how the arguments against having Yasuke over a Japanese are hypothetically rooted in fair concepts about representation, yet for some reason only seem to be worth fighting over in very particular cases.

Also on Samurai, the concept of who was a samurai wasn’t legally codified until over a decade after Yasuke left Japan. And it was largely done because of both how vague the definition was and how readily almost anyone could become a samurai.

  40. Elvothien

AC fans hate every AC game with a passion until like three games later. Then it’s the best thing ever and they’re super nostalgic about it.
