Hello, I came here asking for help after a lot of troubleshooting and I think I am just limited by my knowledge of how CPU cooling and PBO work.

I'm hoping someone more experienced here could shed some light on why my AG620 cooler (which boasts 260W of thermal dissipation) can barely cool my 220W 5900X?

I use Arctic MX-6 thermal paste and I have applied it in a manner where it should cover all the chiplets on the 5900X perfectly. The AG620 is screwed in as tight as I could get it without feeling like I would strip the screws or do some worse damage. PBO is enabled and a negative curve optimizer is applied to help with the heat. I've tried everything and I'm nearing the return window for this cooler.

The tests in the first picture are showing various stats from HWInfo while I'm running a small FFT torture test via Prime95. I'm mostly looking to extract as much processing power out of this 5900X as possible, and the fact that it seems to be throttling at 85°C is very worrying to me.

    well, yeah. At max tilt it cant keep the temps cool and clocks high. Will need a decent 360mm rad like the Arctic LFIII for that.

    Is there any specific reason you chose to set the temperature limit to 85? With PBO enabled, the CPU will automatically target 90°C. Running it at a lower temperature will result in slightly reduced clocks (and slightly lower power utilization).

    Effectively, with PBO enabled, you’re almost certain to hit 90°C under punishing (and Small FFT P95 *is* that) workloads. This is by design. What a better cooler does is allow you to ride that line more effectively, dissipating a higher watt load (and keeping clocks higher).

    You can see this behavior at work in the other direction as well. Try setting the temperature limit to 70, run the same tests, and observe the frequency and CPU PPT / package power sections. The CPU will run “cooler,” but perform less work.

    Did you remove the plastic cover under the cooler?
